Mo-S3 Posted September 7, 2004 Report Share Posted September 7, 2004 Ive been looking at a coupla of laptops for my self but im not sure whether to go for: A straight forward PENTIUM 4 2.8GHz or should i go for a: PENTIUM MOBILE 1.4GHz or an: INTEL CENTRINO 1.4GHz? apreading Posted September 7, 2004 Report Share Posted September 7, 2004 Centrino uses far less power I think. My laptop lasts ages longer than the non-centrino's around the office. I think the mobile CPUs are more compact and possibly run cooler (meaning less fan noise required) than standard CPUs, Centrino takes that a stage further. Mo-S3 Posted September 7, 2004 Author Report Share Posted September 7, 2004 Looking throught he net the main concensus is that the Centrino chip does run a lot cooler and allows uyou to have a thinner notebook but my main concern is whats the performance like compared to the P4 2.8? I have a centrino laptop and it is very good, but then I just mainly use email, Word, some basic Excel and remote control other machines. Will be moslty browinsg the net and downlaoding songs or watching films from it. Would really like it to be fast. You aren't doing particuliarly cpu intensive tasks and I seem to remember it isn't a direct comparison with speed. A centrino is faster than it appears. steve2 Posted September 13, 2004 Report Share Posted September 13, 2004 i am looking for a laptop and my insurance agent has an IBM thinkpad 1.2 ghz, 120 mg ram 20 gig hd they paid just over £600 3 months ago and want £400 for it now,is this a good buy i want to use it for word, photographs from digital camera,small amount of photoshop maybe? shao_khan Posted September 13, 2004 Report Share Posted September 13, 2004 TO be honest I do all my photoshopping on my Mac which is an old iBook G3 450mhz (cost £400) because it is faster than doing it on my 1.5Gb Sony! Both have same 512Mb ram, the mac is just quicker, and at that cost I could afford to buy it for that reason alone. Frodo Posted September 13, 2004 Report Share Posted September 13, 2004 I would be slightly concerned about the RAM, depending exactly how much image manipulation you plan on doing.
