Transmission shunt 5th to 4th on an '98 S8

This is exactly what my beast is doing. Savage clunk then eventually a gear change!!

I had my Auto transmisson fluid changed (under warranty, thank god) result was excellent, super smooth, but on long motorway journeys it re-emerged but not quite as savage. frown.gif

I have told my stealer this and they are going to do extensive tests (thrash it about a bit as they usually do!!!) they have mentioned a 'new gearbox' if they can't solve it.

I shall keep you informed. beerchug.gif

I have had 2 dealers inspect my Prop shaft/rear diff and tell me they are fine. Even though they have experienced the 'shunt' in question crazy.gif

Is it an easy task for mechanics to check? or is there a bit of collective lying going around?!?

Even though I keep going back with the same problem it has to be down to 3 things:

a. Prop shaft

b. rear diff

c. Gear box

I just want my little broom broom to work properly!!!

I suspect it is gearbox related as on mine it only occurs when going from 5th to 4th. The relatively higher torque generated in lower gears would make the problem worse in 3/2 4/3 than in 5/4. Suspect it is a lazy change caused by the car being it one gear (5th) for such a long time. I will request the oil change and hope it clears up.

As all the resident transmission experts are gathered here, a quick q...

I gather the transmission 'learns' how you drive it - as someone else put the first 60k on the clock, is it possible to 'reset' the box and start it learning again? I get similar symptons as Martin, but only at low 'coasting' speeds, and wondered if this could help?

Try turning on the ignition, press the gas pedal to the floor slowly over a 20 second period, hold it for 5 seconds and slowly release it. See if that makes a difference.

It adapts the throttle potentiometer I believe.

Well.....I tried the TPS reset and although I have only done 50 miles since then the shifting seems much smoother, both up/down in tippy and full auto mode. Need to give it a run but it was markedly better. How often do you need to reset this?

I'm not quite sure, still haven't found when to do it in the manual.....I would think after the memory was erased, maybe when the battery is disconnected?

Somebody posted it on the audiworld A8 forum and we have found it to make the trannies a lot smoother.....but it's so expensive and hard to do!!!

Mine did exactly the same after TPS reset... a lot smoother. But I have not had a chance to test it on the motorway yet. This i shall do on Tuesday when I travel all the way back to the dealers to get a new passenger seat belt and a suspension arm replaced ...... and what ever else falls off on the way!! 169144-ok.gif

Yeah, as I said before, when you disconnect the battery at least 15 minutes it resets to the basic setting. From that the learning mode goes quicker. Takes still a bit of driving tho. Dealer says ~250 km for complete adaptation.

I don't like the basic setting, but if it helps...

Mine was getting more and more to my linking after the Euro trip. Now it shifts very quick and smooth, but I do keep it in shape with Tip (use that a lot), and when in auto I don't hang about either. That helps to keep it alert.

Note: think about the radio code when you disconnect the battery! wink.gif
