Chav
does anyone know what a safe max speed to open/close the softtop would be? obviously wind is the problem at too high a speed... but if its not going to break anything, i'd like to investigate getting gizmos to open/close the roof whilst moving and to prevent me having to hold the button down. its so frustrating when your in slow moving traffic but cant lower the roof in case you annoy someone behind because they cant crawl at 5mph for 24 seconds. Ari
Totally agree, it would be ace to be able to drop the roof at up to 30mph like the Saab and I think Porsche 911. Amount of times I've either not dropped the roof cos it looks like rain and I don't want to risk it cos no where to stop, or I have and it has and there's no where to stop! However as the Audi roof was never designed with this in mind I'd be reluctant to force it to do it because it may not be able to cope with the strain of all that fabric acting like a huge sail at 30mph. Whilst on the subject, a remote control option from the key fob would be pretty cool too (even Vauxhall manage this on an Astra cabrio!)
GCab
Remote keyfob would be great for startling passers-by. But you'd have to be the sort of sad bastard who enjoys switching on the 'follow-me-home' ground-lights by remote while someone is walking past the empty car, and watching them leap 3 foot in the air . Phantom
I remember reading a post about changing a fuse to overide the one touch switch. Gave just enough delay to open / close the roof. (I think it was posted by the guy that had the red cab / miltek exhaust at our first cab meet Ari ?) not sure if he ever went ahead and did this though. I don't think it would be practical to try and open on the move, unlike the Saab and the Boxster, the rear cover would act like a huge air break as it opens vertically and would probably shear off at some point. The auto cabs have to be in Park mode to operate the roof properly. p.s saw a really nice Sprint blue Cab at my Audi dealer today, looked the business

[/ QUOTE ] Agreed, I've seen sequential photos of the Saab opening and the hood/cover set up (especially the cover, which stays mainly horizontal) is a lot more aerodynamic at all stages, having been designed for this. The Audi one opens straight up, and just over-riding the switch will not make this in any way safe or compatible with speed.
Chav
dam. so 30mph out of the question then. but how about 5 or 10mph? just enough to lower the roof whilst crawling in roadworks or leaving the car park or even going down the house driveway etc. now i'm wondering if the back cover has to go as high as it does for the roof to go in? or... although 24 seconds isnt that long, it does frustrate me watching the cover go up, then the roof go back, then the cover go down. why cant they do both at once, so its all nicely in sync and time is minimised? Ari
Mine will work if I'm going slow enough, up to about 5mph I guess. Often raise/drop the roof as I slot the car into a parking space (the joy of power steering!)
bearra
Wasn't there a post several months back, someone had found somewhere in Germany that sell the gizmo for remote opening and a another one for one touch opening/closing. They were about £250 each I think.

Chav
cheers...it says on the reinhold site that use of the remote module may be illegal depending on country. is it legal in the uk? seems a bit pricey...but the one touch one is 130 euros which is a bit more reasonable...but a module to do both for that price would be better! am gonna see if a side effect of the one touch module is no speed limitation
Ari
Sounds a bit like they're just covering themselves saying that in case someone were to buy it in a country where it did turn out to be illegal. Can't imagine it is in the UK as Astra and 911 cabs, and Merc SL & SLK have this feature.
Ari
[ QUOTE ] am gonna see if a side effect of the one touch module is no speed limitation [/ QUOTE ] Even if it is, it won't mean that you don't risk serious damage to the hood and mechanism by using it... Lot of money if you wreck it!
Chav
>Lot of money if you wreck it! very very true. and of course the inconvience of not having my beloved cab whilst its being fixed! i wouldnt try anything stupid. it justs annoys me that i cant roll down the street at 10mph lowering it. the wind at that speed isnt going to be a problem. i wasnt thinking of more than 10-15mph.
