DHA
Win98 came on my PC from new. I want to upgrade to XP but would like a clean install. How do i remove 98 but still allow my PC to boot?
Mac
Just install XP and format the partition during build assuming you don't want to keep anything on the Win98 setup.Boot from CD and its all pretty straight forward?
DHA
So it automatically creates a partition then? And no i want all Win98 off the system. 128Mb enough ram?
Riz
Yes 128Mb is ok. Two options really. 1. make sure that your Windows XP disc is the full version and not a upgrade version, also check to see it is bootable! If it is bootable and the full version, just format the hard drive using a dos disk1 etc! boot off the cd and install 2. as above, upgrade windows 98 running the cd from windows and i think it does ask you if you want to reformat the hard drive when the pc reboots. Mac
It'll work with 128 but you'd be better off with more..>RAM is dead cheap at the moment too www.overclockers.co.uk. During the initial setup you get the chance to delete/recreate/format partitions so this is where you can get rid of 98.
DHA
Can i just delete the Win98 files and leave all my other bits intact on the HD or do i need to backup all my stuff? I have one 128 chip at the moment, i might buy a 256 from crucial and run both, only problem is working out if i have non ecc parity or not - can i find out without taking the pc to bits? Mollox
DHA - a good way to find out what ram you need is to go to the Kingston site - they have a pretty comprehensive memory-search thing - you enter the make and model of your pc and it tells you what ram you need Here's the chap
Hopsta
DHA - It will wipe everthing including any data that you have on your C drive, if you have another partition then copy your data onto that b4 you run the install. If you dont then back it up 1st including email addy's export it to a .pst (personal folders) Graham
