On my 1999 S3, remove the wing mirror glass by pulling on one side of it, then undo the 2 wires for the heater element. Undo three three screws, and they just lift up - easy, 10 mins max per side. Not sure on the facelift housings though.

You'll be glad to know that it takes around 10 mins per mirror!!

Just do the following:

1. Adjust mirror so the bottom end sticks out (ie the glass is pointing skywards)

2. Using your fingers, pull the glass GENTLY away from its holder.

3. Disconnect the wires - mark which one goes where!!

4. Under the mirror housing, you'll find 2 screws - remove these.

5. You'll also find 2 or 3 more screws on the inner of the housing that attach the motor etc to the housing - remove these. They may be Torx screws so make sure you've got a set of Torx screwdivers handy!

6. Lift the housing up, starting at the section closest to the door. Takes a while, but you'll note that some there are also some plastic connectors that have to pull away from the housing.

7. Refitting is reverse of the above!

Yeah, its not happening. I just tried taking the old one off and couldn't even get that far. I removed the three torx screws but the casing wouldn't even move. I suspect I may have removed the wrong ones. Do I remove the three that run around the motor in a circular fashion (!!) or the four little black ones set further back, in a square fashion?

Also, I just popped the mirror out of one of the new chrome mirrors and it looks quite different. For starters, there were no two wires plugged onto the back of the mirror, the mirror hand connectors which made contact when in situ. Also, the mirror itself is a different shape and has a black plastic trim.

When I picked the mirrors up (bought secondhand), the guy was also selling some S8 mirrors. Has he given me the wrong ones?

Thats the same!! I'd call that the back of the mirror! Never mind.

Anyway, I had my suspicions that the guy had given me the S8 mirrors so he's swapped them over. Just tried fitting them again and still no joy!! Got the casing off the old one but on trying to fit the chrome one it's still not happening. When I put it in position only one of the screw holes lines up. It looks like the main body of the mirror (which holds the motor on, casing on etc) is different. Should this be so? Looks like I'm gonna have to change the entire thing.

Any suggestions?
