NewNiceMrMe
And, I had to vote for Senna. I just had to. If he'd had Schuey's Ferrari, he'd have won 10 years running in my opinion... I watched that fateful race live too - and it still makes me cringe today when I think of it. I remember being stunned. Lost for words.

JamesB
I find it hard to talk with any authority about F1 pre James Hunt-ish, when I first became aware of the Y-chromosome / fast car association, so I'll have to go with Senna. Maybe Stewart, Fangio, Hill etc were better but I never saw them. Senna just had the ability to rise above the rest in virtually any car. And his pace in the wet was untouchable. xspencex
I think its difficult because F1 has changed so much.. once it was about pure driving talent, now its the whole package testing, PR, technological understanding, oh and an ability to drive... Senna had the driving ability thats for sure but Schumacher has it all... My vote would go for Senna, I admire the driving skills not the ability to work out what what settings he'll use in the next race whilst negotiating a 170 mph corner at the same time..I wanna see nail biting driving on the limit... and Senna did that for me.. I was young when I watched Senna racing and I remember the crash..since then I kinda liked Alesi..capable of brain fade but always fighting never giving up.. squiffy
It has to be Senna. I couldn't possibly vote for Schumacher. The man shouldn't be allowed on a track after his attempted murder of Damon Hill.

sayerbloke
[ QUOTE ] schumi all the way! regarding his murder attempt, Senna did the same to Prost... [/ QUOTE ] And he said he was going to, too. You have Jean-Marie Balestre to thank for that. Prost was a damn fine driver, pity the whole of the FIA was built around supporting him because he didn't really need it. Could have been a good race if they`d stuck to the agreement they`d made before qualifying and had Pole Position swapped to the other side of the grid. That said, some of the things the FIA say today makes you wonder just how far they`d go to make sure Schumacher and Ferrari wins. Mosley is very bad news for the sport. CarMad
Senna all the way. His control and focus was mesmerising and was possibly the first driver to really train and achieve very high levels of fitness. Schumacher is good don't get me wrong but I don't feel that he is tested in as many ways today as GP drivers of old. Yes they still need to have talent on a supreme level, but more is done by people outside of the car than in today IMO. F1 is still the pinnacle of Motor Racing for technology and ultimate driver skill. But not to see a good motor race, if they stabalised the rules for longer than 1 season it would play less into the hands of grandi teams and create a platform to get closer racing. Something not lost of Ferrari I am sure. OOooooppss.. Back on topic.
NewNiceMrMe
Agree completely. I think as far as Mansell is concerned (per a few quotes earlier) his biggest plaudit actually came from Senna and I could go to the grave with that quite nicely. He was asked who he feared most on a track and he named Mansell. When asked why, he said (broken english remember), "Because he is as brave and stupid as I am". Who will ever forget them side by side, an inch apart, at the end of the straight at 185mph...with the corner upon them! And neither would brake until the other bottled it! Legend, utter legend. I'm just thankful I was old enough at the time to appreciate the magnitude of his death and the skills he demonstrated prior to it.
Chav
schu all the way he dominates now because he has transformed the ferrari team and car. he proved it wasnt his car that got him the wins when he won for the first time with benetton

NewNiceMrMe
Possibly an indication of the age groups of TSN-ers more than a lack of respect for the man himself. I'd have put him third if I was doing a top 3. 1. Senna 2. Schumacher 3. Fangio
