Hello all.

As a MKV GTI owner for 6 weeks/2000 miles just to give my (undoubtedly biased) opinion.

At 20K I don't think the car is expensive. Especially when you consider depreciation (or lack of).

For the money what else is there new that offers the same combination of practicality, fun and dare I say it, a bit of snob factor. It's just a very good all round car.

For what it's worth, my initial excitement wore off after a week or so as well but isn't that the same with anything you buy? Especially if it's something you use every day.

I know this thread is nothing to do with 'mines better than yours' etc. and everyone is bound to have their own experiences with the car, but I've honestly had nothing but good reaction from other people, whether they be drivers/pedestrians or passers by. Much of that will be because it's a 'NEW' car and there aren't many around at the moment, but that's the reaction this car gets and that's what this thread is about.

For 26K that's a nice list of cars. Whether something is better than something else is very subjective indeed, but I'd be tempted to say that the only thing that might make some of those 'better' than the Golf is the perception of the badge on the car.

Anyway I'm sure you'll all be pleased for me as I'm very happy with the car.

Peace!

Russell.

I think it's time I updated a few of my views on the Golf GTi.

Firstly, since seeing more and more of them on the roads I have to say I still think they look expensive for what they are (but please see below too). However, colour seems to play a much bigger part with the perception of this car than with any other I can recall in recent memory.

For example, I think White looks absolutely stunning and makes the car look much bigger and more aggressive. I also think the dark metallic blue has a more classy look to it than the other metallics.

Next, Monza alloys are surely an absolute must (no offence intended to anyone who hasn't chosen these). Each time (although it's infrequent) I see a car without them on I think it removes a real edge of 'purposeful stance' from the car.

However, in terms of value, I notice that the majority I have seen (parked up when I've had a chance to have a good look around) have kept to pretty much the basic specification other than the alloys. With this in mind I am inclined to think that as a package the car represents a bit better value than I initially concluded. I still think it's too expensive - but it's not as over expensive as I first made out.

Finally, I am delighted to see that the car has so far been acquired by seemingly responsible drivers and doesn't suffer from anything like the driver-traits of the Chavic Type R.

I think I'd be inclined to get into a Clio Trophy to be honest. However, I'd personally like to thank Alan Day New Southgate for failing to put together the simple test drive I requested in December as they've skillfully protected me from potentially spending the ridiculous amount a GTi specced to my taste would have cost 169144-ok.gif

I had the same thoughts about the original 'Cup' and was shocked to see delivery mileage examples at £10,000 sitting on a forecourt and did have a quick think - but then it IS a clio still....

Thing about the Trophy is that they're only making 500 I think so there's next to no chance of them not selling out - I imagine....And then, what happens if you need new shocks? They're saying they cost 10 times more than regular dampers blush.gif

You won't buy anything "bigger and better" with that level of performance and quality for £20K. grin.gif

I'd not buy new. The £20k would be spent elsewhere on something a year or 18 months old. I know, I know we're going over very old ground again.

We should just press Play and Repeat otherwise we'll be in this thread for the rest of our lives. grin.gif I shouldn't have started it off again. crazy.gif

Ari, have a look round at the Golf GTI forum and see how many people are complaining about problems, some trivial, some really bad and others a total rejection of the car.

Now do the same in the Audi A3 forum, erm nothing a few less active member at the moment maybe but the GTI does not seem a quality product from what I read. Its a good car, but it certainly has its fair share of problems. confused.gif

Mate, with respect thats a daft argument. You could take any new car in the world and argue that you could buy a better one second-hand, including mine and including yours.

Still not come up with anything bigger and better with that level of performance for £20K.

Mollox has mooted a tiny tinny Renault though. ROLLEY~14.GIF
