Canon EOS 350D

I bought a camera mag at the weekend because I am thinking of getting a lower end digital SLR.

They had the 300ES and the D70 in the review. The D70 won but the pictures from the Cannon looked much sharper and better balanced I was really suprised when I looked at the end that the Nikon won.

Will have to give this new one a serious look now as you say.

I was going to buy the D70 now it's got the £100 cashback promotion.

According to dpreview, it beat the EOS300 in a lot of areas, although having studied the images, I think I prefered the EOS300 photo's anyway. However the Nikon was also better in other areas.

Now, though, with the EOS350 being 8mp, and both smaller and lighter than its predecessor, I think I might go with the Canon. Sure, Nikon will bring out something as good, or possibly better, in due course, but how long do you wait ?

That's the problem with digital technologies isn't it?

Spend £700 today on some top spec kit, be it computer, HiFi, AV, or digital cameras, and it'll be superceded next year by something far better for less dosh!

But, you can keep waiting and waiting and just never buy anything.

I'm rather hoping that if I get permission to buy the 350D, it'll last me a goodly few years (certainly for happy snapping, anyway) because 8mp is more than adequate for the 7x5 prints we normally have - even with some cropping/selective enlargement.

nikons d70 is nice but they apply a lot in in-camera processing. This gives you 'nicer' looking pics out of the box with less post-processing required. On the other hand, for more serious-minded buffs, some images look over-processed. Still a great camera, that with some effort and a sniff of talent will produce class images.

The canon 300/350 do less processing in-camera, giving images with less contrast, saturation and noise reduction. So out of the box they can look a little flat, unless you play with the controls or decide that some photoshop post-processing is worth while. On the other hand, this approach produces far more natural looking and not-digital images. You also get the legendary canon 'look' and colour.

The 350D is a serious piece of prosumer kit, and interestingly Canon are not discontinuing the 300. If you're looking for a bargain , check out ebay for 300 bodies over the next few weeks.

Well, my spanking new 350D arrived this afternoon.

I bought the kit with 18-55 lense, 55-200 lense and BG-3 battery grip from PixMania. The kit also comes with some money off vouchers for Canon accessories (lenses, flashguns, etc) and an offer for a free 256Mb CF card.

The camera is much smaller and lighter than a standard SLR and first impressions are that it is really good. Nice bright viewfinder and easy controls (for the basic operations).

My only complaint so far is that there's no English manual supplied but if you can read French, German or Italian, you'd be okay. I've heard this before about PixMania (because they're a French company), but thought they'd got it sorted 'cos you get an English manual with Nikon stuff. My mistake. So, if the kit is just a couple of quid more from a UK dealer, I'd go for that, simply because you get stuff in English. That said, I can't fault PixMania for communications and delivery, and you can download the English manual from Canon's website.

Oh and you also get a lot of space on the Canon imaging website to upload your photo's, and you can share albums with family and friends etc.

I look forward to having a bit of fun with the camera once I've figured out how to use it properly smile.gif

If you don't mind me asking how much (£s) was everything all told?

I've been thinking about the 350D for a wee while now but I'm not sure I want to spend more money when I can get quality pics from my Fuji.... unless of course the price / kit is excellent value!!

It was £878 including postage from Pixmania. It's come down in price by a few quid now. frown.gif

That's for the camera, 18-55mm & 55-200mm Canon lenses and the BG-3 battery grip which enables you to run the camera off 6x AA batteries or 2x NB2LH standard Cannon batteries, as well as providing a handy vertical grip with shutter release and function buttons.

You can get a kit with the same lenses and without the BG-3 grip for £850-ish from Best Cameras. But as the grip costs nearly £100, I thought I'd get the kit with it in (although I doubt I'll use it that much).

I just used Kelkoo to find the best deal.

Took a few snaps with it yesterday and captured a stunning one of my daughter - probably one of the best pictures we've ever taken of her, and that was just messing about. Top camera!
