Private Plate on your R ?

I’ve had my R over a year now, it still has its original issued plate from the DVLA on it, I have a personal plate which I had on my last car but have held back on putting it on the R for a few reasons.

First off its nice to have a “new reg” with your new car and drive around on the latest plate, Secondly a normal reg helps the car stand out less, if that is possible with the R ! Thirdly the plate I have had as been on quite a few cars in our family and for a long time now it has a history of being on vehicles that have been involved in accidents also. 1 being me and the other my dads, both very bad accidents.

My question is do I put it on the R ?

I know this is the same for most on here but, there are only 1 more R local-ish to me and where I live isn’t the safest area, crime is there and we have suffered our selves in the past with car theft and property theft. Putting my plate on the R is going to make it stand out even more and much easier to spot / trace back to where I live. The car isn’t used during the week only evenings and weekends so is locked up outside but parked out of sight in a hidden yard / area.

Another thought is when your out and about for a Sunday blast having a spirited drive, does an easy to remember plate (3 letters and 3 numbers all the same) make you more susceptible to being noted for bad or dangerous driving buy some old guy in his Hyundi Lantra and possibly reported?

How do you other guys / grils get on with your plates ?

Cheers

Matt

I've got a private plate as I think it finishes off a nice car. I also don't like the new style number plates (especially the one that was on my car). I had the same plate on my old car (Mk 3 Golf GTI 16v) which didn't stand out quite as much as the R32 and people I know said to me that they'd seen me 3 days previously and knew it was me because they recognised the plate rather than the car. So memorable plates do stick in people's minds.

If I got cut up by a car with a personal plate I'd be more likely to remember for the next time I saw them around.

TBH though I think the R32 stands out enough as it is and a personal plate isn't really going to make that much difference if the people nicking it know what they want.

Had my plate on four cars now. The only 'issue' I have is that people comment a few days/weeks leter, "saw you at OR why were you parked at?". If I was to be somewhere I shouldn't be, I'd take a bus or taxi 'cos everyone knows my plate and they tend to report back if they've seen the car somewhere unusual (within earshot of Mrs TP)!!! Difficult to be anonymous with a Private Plate in your local area!!

i changed the number on my r straight away cos the lad that had it before me bought a private plate from dvla that he said was made for the car i,e, r32 in configuration . i have a private plate now but it still denotes the year of manufacture if you know what i mean . i also still have the previous plate on retention.<< insert big wink>>

I think Golfgirl is right about it being an R32 and people will notice it/remember it regardless of number plate. There is only one other DBP R32 where I live and people remembered my ludicrously long standard plate. I've now got a plate on it that I used to have on my motorbike (which got me noticed a lot more - especially by the police).

I have a private on my 32, as this was my first ever car I had bought brand new, I decided to go the whole hog and fit a PP to her. Nothing to extravagant mind... 169144-ok.gif

As Claire states (Golfgirl) the R32 will stand out like a greyhound's whatsits whether it's on the original new stylie plate or a PP.

Thanks for all the replys and views, I think i'm going to put the plate on the R and see how it goes. Just keep my eyes open and see how things gow with it. I can always put it back on retension.

I do like the dvla plate I already have on, it ends in MVW ( Matts VW smile.gif )

Hello People

On the R32 we have VW 04 FUN

And on the Touran VW 04 MUM

And we picked up VW 04 DAD for the concept R when it comes out, (265 BHP mid engine rear wheel drive, Two seater, ) Don’t know if it has a limited slip diff !

Have not had any problems yet in the touran……But I picked up a speeding ticket in the R a while back.

If you rag your car most of the time you need a plate like this WV 03 VWV (£499) Try working that one out when its flying past !........was that ….vvw or wvw

If you don’t drive like a fool you should be ok with any pp, and you might make some money out of it !

Cheers, Griff ECLIPSe.gif
