Honda Civic Type R

I dont agree the CTR has to be driven hard, theres actually quite a lot of tourqe from even low down, in fact its better than the S2000 in that respect, the Civic has the i-VTEC which improved on low down power no end on the previous version of the engine (Civic VTi,Integra,s2000).

I agree on the tye situation though, as for the GOlf beware....VW has qualtlty and reliability issues with the current GTi, my a freind of mine picked his up and only got 3 miles home...went indoors came back out and there was a pool of oil under the car, VW recovered it and fixed it ok but it was a bit scary! My Civic has covered 38,000 miles with no probs at all.

The previous GTi was a big old lump of lard, it handled ok, but didnt have any life in it at all, very hesitand even with the V5 engine, and the 1.8T was i belive and afterthought!

The Civic will give you years of good motoring, trust me!

Why is it that when ppl see a reasonably priced car they think the build is crap I own the slightly sedated civic 2.0 type s but the interior is very good and well built. You will never see an unmodified civic broken down. But you certainly get VW's breaking down. Fact is Honda havnt had one of their civic engines fail yet at least honda have the qulaity where it counts. And it takes the R32 an extra 1.2ltr capacity to blow off a type R i dont see anything to boast about. Youd have to have very deep pockets just to race against a type r would cost you even more to beat it.

good point, if you were to compare a R32 with a honda which has the same size engine then it is going to be the NSX....and whats going to win there? lol i like golf's though, very nice interiors and comfy seats. a friend has a gttdi and no matter what gear you are in, if you put your foot down it pulls away very well

Here's a simple question- is it the CTR owners that are insecure, or the ill-informed people that are so quick to jump on the CTR's back?

I love the way people slate the car for doing what it does, when if they thought about it, they would realise- you buy a car to suit your tastes. That way someone too lazy to enjoy a high revving car can get a V6, or a diesel. Someone who likes steering feel can buy something other than a CTR. Someone who appreciates the physics of a competant fast car can avoid anything that has 'VW R32' written on the back of it.

Crickey, there are thousands of different cars out there and one mans meat is another mans poison. Get over it

i have just bought an 05 CTR with 201 miles on it, first Honda i have ever owned, in fact first one i had ever driven. So I AM NO EXPERT. I took it for a test drive, i thought it was just like any other 2.0 litre motor, yes its a hard ride, the steering felt strange to me but everything felt really tight. then you put your foot down, rev up to 8000! thats going to get some getting use to, jesus!. i had an A6 absolutely perfect to drive, comfort , saftey economical too (1.8t) the CTR brought something out though can't put my finger on it but..... X factor i think. I look at this site on most days, i do live in awe of all your cars an your mods and tweaks, you all seem to know your stuff! i am a bit disapointed in what i have just read, i know most off it is in fun...the last thing i want to do is to protray my self as a chav in a ctr, i honestly think the ctr has more than thou, its basic in side but nicely done. its never likely to break ( i hope) i like it. i also like the golf r32 stunning car, do all the sprint times really matter? i know i'll blag my car around , having a play, but just because its slightly slower on paper than other cars doesn't matter, i'm not that good that i can get these times out of it anyway. i just know i will enjoy my new motor and like reading about others who enjoy theirs. i don't think i'm having a mid life crisis .........but i'll ask the sweedish au pair..

cheers

Dont ever diss the Civic, there is nothing else quite like it its a very pure sports hatch...be grateful it exists or you would have to put up with crap from Ford and Vauxhall that did 0-60 in 10 secs and that was fine........until the civic set the benchmark! Noticed how the new Golf GTi does 0-60 in 7.2,VXR 6.2,and Focus ST 6.5 we have honda to thank for that they set the benchmark with the Type R in 2001!

APPART FROM THE COSSIE...... Or were you asleep through that era....

Anyway a Honda is similar in build quality to a Ford and Vauxhall these days.

Just spotted this thread.

must say it's pretty unbelievable for its intolerance and snobby treatment of the Type R and it's advocates.

I am qualified to comment on the relative merits of yours and mine beloved German performance hatches and the "pretenders" from the East.

Pretenders I think not!!

Before I had my 1996 Integra Type R modified into a rally car, in standard ex-factory street trim it whipped my 2002 S3 (chipped to 250PS) around the track - posting times 2sec quicker on a 50sec lap - huge margin. Same driver - me smile.gif

The Integra (and the Civic is very similar in concept) is a completely more involving drive and provides the driver with far more feedback and pure thrill at the track.

It is not as well built but more reliable - my 2 S3s had a new shortblock and repaired gearbox between them!!

Give me an Audi any day as a street car/long distance vehicle and the quality provides wonderful ownership pleasure.

For driving thrills and that Sunday morning fang - give me a Type R Honda ANY day.

Get your blinkered biased head out of the sand and go drive one!!

Cheers

Well I think I qualify to be able to give a balanced view in both the CTR and the R32 as I have just changed from a ctr to a Mk5 R32.

The ctr was a fantastic car; it was mighty quick and handled like it was on rails. The build quality was top notch. The gearbox is the best manual G/B bar none. The bad points were that it was skittish over bumpy roads and it would dislodge your spine if you hit a pot hole smashfreakB.gif Don't even think about "trying" on wet/greasy roads it will try to slap you EEK2.GIF

The R32 - well again a fantastic car, not an out and out racer like the ctr - more refined, there are a lot more gadgets than the Honda and the cabin is of a lot higher quality, if it is screwed together better only time will tell.

The handling is as good just not quite as involving as the Honda.

For the day-to-day commute to and from work the VW wins hands down, more relaxing and comfortable with the ability to make you grin just a squeeze of the right foot away.

Ok which is the quickest? well 0-60 I would say there aint a nats breath in it (except in the wet) 60-100+ the R32 no question

At the end of the day I’m glad I have had both and have enjoyed both of them to pretty much the same amount. Just dive and enjoy ECLIPSe.gif

That's very interesting mate!

I've never had the chance to drive a Type R, but friends at work have had them and rave about them.

I changed to the R32 recently after selling my JCW Mini. Everyone always laughed at the Mini as being a "womans car" but that's just a stereo type (quite like the stereo type of a boy racer in a CTR). Still I always said that the bunch of hot hatches out at the time (i.e. CTR / FRS / JCW Mini, etc) were all very well matched.

Going to the R32, I always wondered how these would compare to the other "hot hatches" on the market. Having driven a Clio Cup, Focus RS, Focus ST and also the Mini, I'm very happy with the R32 as being the best of the bunch.

It's good to hear the comparision with the CTR as people at work think I'm crazy having gone for the R and not the CTR! I'm confident I made the right decision and am loving my car at the moment!!

Cheers! 169144-ok.gif

It's a shame that the CTR seems to be going the way of the boy racer. I guess it's like anything that after a certain amount of time, prices will drop to the reaches of the more 'kevvy'. I had mine from new in 02 and there weren't a huge number around then. I loved it, kept it nearly two years in which it tooks us to the French Alps loaded for 6 months of living. After massive snowfall, it sat unused in a snow cocoon up to it windows for 3 months. Dug it out in March and it started first twist. I foolishly traded it for a 182 and regret that a lot. Never EVER French again. The Clio went after 8 months and i'm back in a Type-R again, this time the original 'Daddy' Integra.

As said previously, the noise, harsh ride, lack of A/C (in mine anyway) is not for all. For some though, it's a blast each and every day. jump.gif
