New Ipaq/TomTom Install - GPS Position Unreliable?

Recommended Posts

I've got an Ipaq 1940 and a bluetooth TomTom receiver but can't get it working. When I try and set a destination it says it won't start the guidance until the GPS position is reliable. How do I do this?? On the screen of my Ipaq there is a little square on the bottom left with a power plug with a red cross over it. Is it telling me it needs to be plugged in to a power source? I'm running both devices off their own battery's, relying on bluetooth for communication (I don't do leads).

Whats its beef??

ok bluetooth can be a pain in the ass to get working ,

1st have you set up a 'pairing' with tomtom and gps reciever ?

is this a tomtom reciever or an ebay one ?

when its paired do the following

reset the PDA, turn on the gps reciever , now turn on the PDA go to blueooth and see if the two are communicating ( you will see data going between the two )

next go to tomtom and chose preferences , then go to gps and you will see the graphs of sats' are they all there ? you will need to see the graphs and have one or two 'in the red' to get a strong signal, id bet that the 2 devices are not 'talking to each other ' as yet so this part is not working , let me know how you get on !

Right I've managed to get them paired, and when you look at the bluetooth manager it shows the two as connected. It doesn't show data being transmitted though. So it would seem they're connected, just not communicating. Got no sign of any "red" on the graphs either.

Oh, its a tomtom receiver, not an Ebay one.

ok if they are paired ,click on it and chose connect, then in bluetooth manager are they showing as communicationg ? you need to set the tomtom as an 'authorised' device so it pairs automatically , when its shown as connected start tomtom and check then

In the TomTom book it says that after setting the bluetooth connection, which I have done, I need to modify the properties of the software on the PDA. I need to choose the "NMEA protocol". Problem is, when I go to GPS status, where it gives me the option to do this there are several NMEA 0183v2 to choose from. They appear to have a speed next to them, eg. NMEA 0183v2 9400, and NMEA 0183v2 33000 etc then there's one called NMEA 0183v2 BLUETOOTH. I chose this one. To the left of the window which displays this there is a big "check box" thing that when you click, a tick appears. It suggests that it should be ticked to enable the chosen protocol. As soon as I tick this box the ipaq goes tits up. It locks up, runs really slow, and generaly can't be used. I've changed the NMEA thing to different ones but as soon as the box is ticked it locks up again.

Getting pretty fecked off with it now.

mmm not sure about that is this TT5 ? i did not have to do anythign like that ... when you start the program it will ask you which reciever you are using , you just click on the bluetooth one... thats all i needed to do ! just get the pda and the reciever talking to each other , then install TOMTOM do the update from the website then power tomtom up , it should run though the config 1st time its run, sounds like you have a probem just re install it , dont remove the maps , just the porg and it wont take more than a few mins

are you getting the items paired and the communication between the two showing ? in tomtom the little yellow and green signal will spin if they are ' talking to each other' regardless of how the bars look . It may work in doors but i found it only really worked well outside... if anything open a window and put it outside , just make sure you are within 5 feet or so of it and it should still work

I would have no expectation of receiving a GPS signal indoors. Can you imagine how surprised I was when 'bench' testing my RNS-E on the upstairs landing (totally internal - no windows) - I plugged in the GPS antenna just for the h*ll of it and it immediately found six satellites, and gave a fix?

In my defence, I did try it in the conservatory and I did try it upstairs, sat by the window, with the receiver on the outside window sill!!

So feck off you lot, I'm not an idiot! the_finger.gif
