RedRobin
I'm curious to know why most TSN members blank out the number plates of their cars when they show photos of them on this web site. Is it simply because someone did so early on and everyone else has assumed it's required ? Or is there a security reason ? Thanks

RedRobin
Okay but what could an unfriendly prowler achieve by seeing a reg plate ? BTW, I notice your Loc: Here, there and everywhere!! (= prowler!!) Thanx

RedRobin
See that powerful searchlight on the front of my engine avatar ?....That's for seeking out prowlers!! Gotcha!! We now ALL know you're a prowler!! But I still don't understand what the security issue is.

Nice Boxster, VERY nice!! So the "Big hair" comes from driving an open car at speed ? Or from hairdressing ? M16 too!! You've come here too late....You just missed that prowler I found. So, do I understand that if I posted pix on TSN showing registration you would Photoshop them to blanks ? I'm also (naively) wondering what do plate cloners gain from their dark art ? Sorry for all the quezzies so early in the morning....It's just my mind's thread. Cheers
monsta_mo
Congestion Charges for one. Someone else's plate = no charges []
lagrian
I've heard that they can copy your number plate and put it on a car the same make and colour, then they can speed all they like and you get the fines, happened to a guy at our work. He only got the fines waved because in the photo's that captured the car speeding it was a different colour to what it should be. So the only reason I can think of its ever so slightly easier for some one to copy your plate down with car model and colour. I don't really see it as essential myself to cover up the plate. I see it as no difference to sitting at the side of the road and seeing number plates. But then I am willing to be educated otherwise
TP27
Other folk rip off Number Plates and do runners from Petrol Stations....... I just err on the side of caution and blank out the number plate on all photos.....seems to be the norm on TSN and I think (in this day and age) it's sensible... chriswastle
Whats the difference between spotting a car in the flesh or on the internet??? If you go to any manufacturers website the secondhand cars have the reg number displayed in the details, VW included. Getting number plates made has become very difficult and it is more common place for the actual plates to be removed! It has happened twice at my workplace... ho hum. RedRobin
Very interesting ....Congestion Charge avoidance / Petrol Station runners / Speeding Fines and anything else a certain kind of mind can think of! I would have thought that any pro could forge a plate without resorting to the risks of being seen nicking one. Also, as lagrian says, a 'prowler' (mentioning no names!) could sit at the roadside and even take photos. Having said that, I'm not knocking erring on the side of caution. I just acquired a plate for my soon-to-arrive GTI which is very cooool and I'd love to share my excitement (even if it invites all sorts of flame etc!). Should I spell it out in normal text in a post here? Cheers
skifly
Cars can be cloned where someone takes the plate of another car and uses it on their vehicle... these normally are different make/colour/model cars to the original but the really nasty ones are the "ringers" which is where someone finds the exact same vehicle (make, model and colour) and copies a plate - then the car stands up to the congestion charge visual check, the speed camera checks etc... and the legitimate plate owner will get the PCN. Its easy to use a site like this where people are passionate about listing the details of their cars and putting up photos to harvest plate details to "ring" a car. have to admit its still not that difficult to get plates made up even now. [/ QUOTE ] Well, I can walk down the street and make notes on car plates all day, that is my right. No diffreent to Train Spotting. The difference, as far as I can see it is, these are not being published to the entire planet by me, they are for my personal use, whatever that may be. I don't want to paste a strangers plate up to the world. Why should I? Privacy does still have a meaning. I would be pi$$ed to see my reg posted. If it doesn't bother you that's just fine but you have to respect others. Bottom line is respect and privacy, if you want to debate my right to privacy, that's not up for debate, sorry. Thank you
lagrian
yes I agree I wouldn't like to see my plate posted by someone else like you say you have a right to privacy. The same reason I wouldn't like to see someone else post a picture of me on the internet with out my permission. But I thought the debate was to cover your own number plate on the internet when posting. I do not disagree with you that there is no harm in just covering it up, seems sensible, but then on the other hand I see no real reason to cover it up either, which leads me to say its not an obvious. RedRobin
I don't see why there is any debate...TSN are respecting all our privacies as best they can and by blanking our plates. If, for example, someone isn't that bothered (and they have the right not to be bothered) they presumably can still broadcast their plate either by using it as or within their uploaded identity image/avatar, or simply in message text or signature (mine is VW?? ???)....You watchin' Mister Ringer ? Personally, though I would love to share/boast/pose/whatever you care to judge me for, my new plate I am VERY grateful and appreciative that TSN care about its members in this respect. ???? aka RedRobin
RedRobin
I wrote my last post before I read the last couple by lagrian and Tian....Yep, I think we are all agreed. In my opinion, both lagrian and Tian are absolutely right. Cheers
aswall
They're also put on matching cars that have been stolen. It's normal practice anywhere on the net to blank them, not just on TSN
RedRobin
Then I'll (one day when I have my GTI!!) post my pix with the plates already blanked in Photoshop. I'm glad I asked and we all understand a bit more Just as well, my new plates are an absolute killer!! And I'll be saved from all sorts of teasing/flaming/envious comments here!! I still can't believe how lucky I got and how the 'big boys' missed this one!
