Chav
Following on from 3.2 weight discussion.... It's an interesting one, this weight/balancing issue. Here are some unladen weight figures for reference. B7 SALOON WEIGHTS Quattro/Manual (it's available for most engines - quattro adds 65kg over FWD) 2.0T - 1490Kg 3.2FSI - 1540Kg 3.0TDI - 1655kg 4.2S4 - 1660Kg So, clearly the TDI is still the heavy lump (although good performance for a carbon sprayer) The new 3.2FSI looks to be nice and lightweight too. B6 CABRIOLET WEIGHTS Quattro/manual (for comparison to the saloon) 1.8T - 1630Kg 3.0 - 1673Kg 4.2S4 - 1855Kg FWD/manual (for other engines etc) 1.8T - 1540Kg 2.4 - 1600Kg 3.0 - 1580Kg 2.5TDI - 1685Kg So we see the cab is a good 140Kg heavier than a similar saloon. (equivalent to 2 adults in bodyweight or so) But look at the weight of the S4 cab 3.0 looks nice and light to me! So my 3.0 cab at 1580kg* is 170Kg lighter than the S4 cab at 1855Kg! (another 2 adults' bodyweight) The B7 has the engine back 4cm, which may help to a degree with nose heaviness. In my cab, I keep the front chairs as far back as they can go, and a full tank of gas (where possible). I'm convinced these help too. In terms of cab weight distribution, we have the heavy steel windscreen frame and the strengthened doors, but we also have, at the rear of the car, the anti-rollbars, the roof hydraulics and the rear shell strengthening. I wonder if balancing is affected that much overall for cab vs saloon? I reckon weight is the killer more than balancing. Thoughts fellow Audi scholars? *my cab is actually a bit heavier as the CVT gearbox adds 20-30kg I think.
lmmlmmam
[ QUOTE ] But look at the weight of the S4 cab [/ QUOTE ] It shocked me when I first found out. Dampened my desire to own one for a while. But from driving it you'd never know, the car never feels heavy (in a bad way). The 1.8T did but neither 3.0 nor S4 do. I don't think weight is a particular issue for handling per se. Obviously light is the best route for ultimate performance and economy but if you don't want to own something like an Elise then the muscle route is a pretty good second best. lmmlmmam
Another thought. Consider two cars that are generally acknowledged to be great handlers, the Elise and the Boxster. I know the Elise is light and had always assumed the Porsche would be, but actually it isn't. I think good handling comes when all the components are in harmony. Just random thoughts of course probably all BS, and of course bad engineering can screw up a really nice selection of parts. And of course it depends on who you are trying to please as shown by the eternal BMW vs Audi handling debate. CM

lottiefox
Surprised how much heavier the 2.5 TDi cab (although guess its logical..) - can imagine that confirms the feedback they are pretty nose heavy.... Always found the 2.4 to be fairly weighty but very smooth cruisemobile, and I guess you don't buy an A4 cab if you want to corner with your hair on fire. Which is why I changed....
