CRJ_1
Can anyone recommed a device to help polish/shine a car that doesn't: 1. Give you RSI (aka not much elbow grease required) 2. Make so much noise that the neighbours complain 3. Requrie overseas order to get pads etc 4. Require a second mortgage to purchase BTW I use Megs polish/wax on black pearl with the Megs polishing coth, maybe it's just me but it seems harder to remove compared to Autoglym that I've previously used. Cheers.

CRJ_1
Thanks for the assitance guys. I've been digging around and found this review - http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/product_test/58139/best_buffers.html Winning 2 were sub £20, what do you think? Cheers
Brazo
The problem with auto express is that they know feck all about anything! Yes I'm a subscriber! In their most recent wax/polish test Kim Adams the tester stated that he would add polish after a wax to increase protection. At that point the whole extremly flawed test lost all credibility and the sheer incompetence of the tester was highlighted. Thats why I don't beleive a word AE says! As for their polisher test, most were the £14.99 type that are next to useless for serious polishing, although to be fair to AE they wouldn't have tested a pc as its not a legitimate EU/UK product as has to be imported and used with a step down transformer. Andy_PC
I raised this on the Meguiars UK forum when the subject of AE tests was raised. IMHO they're not designed for the truly fanatical at all - hence why their wax test ranged from good old Super Resin through from memory to Swissol - hardly a proper comparison! Either they're trying to appeal to everyone (fair enough) or simply grabbing a bunch of products to test (again fair enough) but for wax I'd either try the Guru Report as it's far more in depth and buy stuff for myself or simply experiment with different products to see what "works". As most who read AE would, I suspect, plump for a one stage cleaner wax most times (ie a couple of hours a month, tops), I'd take most of their conclusions with a pinch of salt. AE could have chucked in a rotary or Cyclo for comparison - something like "here's what a big money polisher can do" sort of thing - as most wouldn't then rush out and spend several hundred quid - they'd probably find a pro to machine polish for them!! That said, I bought my trolly jack off the back of (amongst others) AE's test and it's worked just fine - so much so that I got a second one - always easier to work with 2 when you're polishing your exhaust I find..... stewarta13wsb
So just as an occasional 'arm saving' waxer are you guys saying that even the Meguiars one isn't powerful enough?
Andy_PC
It's OK but I prefer a good handjob myself.... Seriously, I can seal/wax a car as quickly by hand as by machine - not boasting but with most sealants, they just work better by hand - the only benefit with a machine being the ability to lay a really thin layer down IMHO. Plus, you're hardly likely to be sealing every week

No risk it spins you around if you're not careful, but imho a polisher shouldn't be that powerful anyway - just to avoid potential damage to the paint. It's safe to use, and it makes your life just that bit easier: just rest it on the paint and move it from side to side... It may not be the cheapest one around, but I love the fact it's cordless, and it doesn't make a racket (it merely 'buzzes'). I've worked with extention cables before, but hated the cords all over the paint, getting stuck under the wheels, etc. This is way easier! With the two included rechargeable batteries I can easily polish and wax my entire car (it takes a few charges though before the batteries reach their full potential). Necessary? Perhaps not, but if you don't miss the bucks it's worth getting anyway. [ QUOTE ] BTW I use Megs polish/wax on black pearl with the Megs polishing coth, maybe it's just me but it seems harder to remove compared to Autoglym that I've previously used. [/ QUOTE ] I use the applicator pads (where I don't use the buffer), and to polish off I use the terry towels (I got the Megs, but any clean (white) terry towel will do, provided you don't use fabric softener). If you apply the wax evenly and thinly you should be able to 'dust it off' rather than rub it off... My Gold Class wax is very easy to work with. CRJ_1
Great feedback guys, thanks. I like the simplicity of the cordless Megs polisher, it may not be the best but if it saves a bit of hand action without leads etc then this sounds a good comprimise to me. Andy_PC
It really depends what you want to achieve with it TBH - any cordless buffer will be relatively low powered so great for applying sealant/wax if that's what you want, just don't expect it to do any serious polishing - it won't/can't. Sven
Nah, I just keep it well maintained and refrain myself to removing the occasional small scratches, but if the entire car needs serious polishing I'd rather give it to an expert. If they feck it up it's their money paying for the new paintjob. I wouldn't take a high power rotary buffer to my car any more than attempting to paint it myself. That said, the first time I did a way better polishing job with my new Megs kit than the previous 'professional' had done. Since then I've brought it to a Sonax agent once - after it was keyed front to back by some sad twat - and they did an excellent job I must say. What I'm saying is there's only so much you can do yourself. Leave the rest to a - good - professional.
CRJ_1
Agreed Sven_S8 & I ordered the Megs hand polisher yesterday, anything that it won't do I'll go to pro's to get done. Cheers
