Tunner can i just say what an excellent post! 169144-ok.gif

I have used McGuard wheel bolts in the past and know how highly recommended they come. I naively assummed that new car manufacturers would have had locking wheel bolts of a high standard with thousands of combinations.

Got my McGuard bolts the other day well pleased! just cant wait to stick them on my car(sometime this week with any luck!).

LeMans, go back and look at the photo, then you will see how educated they need to be in my case!

One lustful look at my alloys will show 'the scum' I have fitted McGard.

If you were to fit a cap over a McGard, you could well find your alloy being held on by one bolt and possibly without you noticing that the VW bolts had been removed!

I was lucky. I went to my TT in daylight (05:30) in the summer. All of the centre caps had been removed (stolen) and a couple of bolts were lying on the floor. Needless to say my after market bolts had not been touched.

If you disguise your McGards, it might be possible to find that 4 of the OEM bolts have been removed, but the theft thwarted by the new bolt. Then your alloy is attached with the single bolt left!

A neighbour bought a small matt black touch up pencil and painted his bolt heads.

You are surely talking about a re-map which will give you more than 10% power increase and so I would expect that fitting McGards isn't going to keep your existing premium from increasing. Also, your excess may take a hike.

I hope I am wrong but we all know that insurance companies make our stealers look like amateurs! Isn't the Revo transparent/undetectable? - Thought I read it somewhere.

RedRobin, my comments were a bit 'tounge in cheek'.

My guess is that when I phone them to tell them about my proactive stance to stop folk stealing my wheels, they will not offer a rebate.

When i tell them about an Oettinger or Revo re-map.....I am expecting a 20% hike.

Revo is undetectable, but what happens if you have an accident, are unable to change the code back and the insurance company investigate your car? The third party will not lose out, but you will!

Revo, One Click. Not telling your insurance company is madness. Upside down in a ditch, are you going to be able to revert the re-map codes?

I have McGuard locking nuts too and have done for a while. Seems they are universally regarded as the the nut of choice for protecting your wheels at a reasonable cost.

One word of warning though - and this has come from years of users using them - the removal key can be quite delicate. I have no idea whether they have resolved this problem yet but many people have found the teeth strip themselves on the key and have ended up ordering a free replacement from McGuards.

Just be careful and don't be too brutal when using the McGuards key - last thing you want is a punctured wheel that won't come off when its dark and raining 169144-ok.gif

Make sure you get the 28018 SL versions (SL for slip ring). This version has the rotating collar making it even more difficult to take off. The groupbuy on this forum is through the same person (phatphil) that ran the groupbuy on UK_MKIVS.net (where I got mine). He was having problems with his suppliers and it took over a month to get my locking nuts - so don't be surprised if there's a delay between ordering and receiving the bolts...
