Henke
Hi there! Just wondering does anyone know much about these 'easy to fit' power module packs that claim to increase your BHP by +15? Is it dodgy? Any information appriciated! They are sold on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/15BHP-Power-Module-L...bayphotohosting

Mollox
From the point of view that a bonafide remap from a reputable tuner costs upwards of AUS$1,500 I think there's only one answer Also, where will these people be if anything goes wrong? I can't begin to tell you how much I wouldn't go anywhere near that sort of thing with a bargepole. Buyer beware!
Henke
Ya, was thinking that myself theres a good reason why professional remaps cost what they do! but just interested to see if anyone here has had any good/bad experiences. Guy who is selling them seems to have 100% positive feedback on Ebay
Torino101
[ QUOTE ] Any reason in particular? [/ QUOTE ] Because the whole thing is a qvc type sales blurb without any indication of how this theing works or what it does. Also the power increases are similar to chipping the car - which costs several hundred pounds.
Mollox
I'm not technical enough to know why but what this unit basically does is sit on the Comms line from/to the ECU. When it senses a signal it (at a basic level) intercepts it and amplifies it by what it deems to be a safe amount based on the fact that "all production cars run with spare capacity" and the car gets pushed a bit more. The fact that this is a "one size fits all" worries me the most... On the other hand I have a lot more confidence in my remap because it was tuned for my model of car and specifically works to within known limits, simultaneously tweaking all manner of variables including fuelling, boost and timing. Also, every single parameter has been worked out in advance wheras your plug in unit just does everything on the fly if that makes sense... Chris_B
[ QUOTE ] Guy who is selling them seems to have 100% positive feedback on Ebay [/ QUOTE ] I'm sure people who buy them think they're great; a simple fitment job required and ding! a faster car. It's effectively a resistor to atatch to the air metering system that makes the ECU think the incoming air is colder than it is. Colder air is denser, so contains more oxygen. So, the ECU adjusts the fuel delivery and ignition timing for a condition that doesn't really exist. There just has to be a downside, otherwise car manufacturers would have mapped the ECU to behave that way in the first place. A proper ECU remapping job tunes the mapping tables for the many parameters the ECU uses to make it's fueling and timing descisions, and will make a better job of adjusting for differing environmental factors. Chris_B
Oh, and resistors are very cheap. Even resistors in small plastic boxes with a pair of fly leads attached are cheap, so the margin on these things must be immense.
Henke
That makes sense alright! It's pretty much the same reservations I'd have aswell. WOuldn't want to risk it for the sake or curiosity either. How much did your remap cost if you don't mind me asking? I'm thinking of getting it done on my A4 1.8T quattro
