How "hard" do you drive?

Just wondering what the general consensus is? I tend to let my cars warm up then give it a blat, sometimes close to the rev limit but not always - then a bit of a cruise at m-way speeds. Some more acceleration then sedate driving to cool things down.

Is this ok for the longevity of a car? And what about if it was chipped?

always let the coolant warm up to 90 and then wait some time to allow the oil to catch up to working temp...

same for cooling down... run last few miles off boost at reasonable speeds to let engine cool down, let it idle for a bit, then turn it off..

on the S3 there is an electric coolant pump, that passes coolant around the turbos water jacket to further help take away the heat... when ignition is turned off.

likewise if your bombing down the motorway, DO NOT pull off to services and just turn engine off... try and plan ahead running off boost or let car idle and cool down before shutting down.

sounds a hassle, but really isnt. It doesnt take alot, and will keep your baby in tip top shape..

Driving a tractor, i cant really rev the s### outta my car anyway....she's done 160k with the same turbo, engine, clutch, etc, so it cant make THAT much difference.....

Most of my hard driving is around roundabouts and stuff....they sort the men from the boys....not of this gay driving fast in a straight line stuff! tongue.gif

Yep never above 3k or more than half throttle until the water temp shows 90! Then I might push it to about 4k max for the next 5 mins. After that I give it some! I used to drive it hard actually quite often changing up at about 6k-6.5k most of the time! smirk.gif I always let it cool down properly as well, drive slower and again only upto 3k for the last few miles then let it idle for a bit before turning it off.

Must admit lately though I've started to think, I'm probably keeping this car for at least 3 years and possibly anything upto 80k so I should treat it a bit better. been keeping it pretty sedate lately, doesn't pass 4k too much apart for the odd spurt! Its a bit more boring but at leat my consumption has gone from 25 to 35!! laugh.gif

Hmm Just had another thought, my S3 is on variable service and its going to be about 17k-17.5k so maybe it can take alot more stick than I've been giving it! ECLIPSe.gif
