MK.4 Golf questions!

When I have the dash display set to show average mpg it seems to be accurate but when I put it into the other mode, which I assume is showing actual mpg at that particular time,it's all over the shop. One second it's saying 45mpg,then 60,then 141(?),then back to 45 and so on.

It doesn't seem to me like it's working properly and if it isn't,what exactly needs replacing.

The second question is with regards to the seat position.

Is there no way of raising the front of the seat ie under the knees,so that it kind of tilts you back a bit?

I've looked in the handbook and I don't see an adjustment.

However,I've never had a car where you couldn't adjust this and it feels like I'm sitting on the seat rather than in it,if you see what I mean.

Any help from you clever VW folk appreciated! 169144-ok.gif

Tbh I think the dash display is probably working ok. You only have to ease off on the throttle a tiny bit and the mpg will go through the roof as quick it will drop through the floor if you accelerate.

Gradients in the road will also have to be taken into account as well. Going upwards obviously means more fuel is required by the engine to achieve the same speed.

As far as the seat, my seat only has adjustments for up/down, backwards/forwards and then the back portion of the seat can be tilted as well. Mine is a 3-door so I don't know if the 5-door seats are any different?

AS per Simon's post, there's nothing wrong with the realtime mpg reading. It's a fairly useless feature of the DIS i.m.o., but it's been a feature on VW's for a long time now, so I guess someone must find it useful.

What model of Golf do you have? There is a tilt option on the seat on the GTI's, TDI's R32's etc, but this is dependent on the model. It does tilt the seat to a degree, although it also raises and lowers the seat - there's an arm on the right hand side of the seat (as you're sitting in it) which you "pump" to raise the seat.

Cheers guys! 169144-ok.gif

In that case, the average setting seems to be the only one of any use,so I'll stick with that!

I know the seat has a lever to the right but it seems to shift the back of the seat up so you feel like you're perched on the edge.

I'm guessing from your replys that it doesn't have the function that I was looking for/expecting,so I'll just have to live with it.

It does seem like bad design when VW can ommit what I would call a necessary setting.

Like I said before,I haven't had a car in the last 6 or 7 years that didn't have it! frown.gif

  • 4 weeks later...

I thought the same about the mpg thing until i spoke to "soot chucker" on the phone, and after pressing the button on wiper stick the average mpg reading is much better, although the best i've managed is 51 mpg. It gets a bit addictive on a easy going road to see how good you can get the economy, then i look back and see a Q of cars behind and realise i've dropped my speed on low throttle blush.gif and then have to boot it and all that effort goes down the drain (or injectors) grin.gif

as for the seat, @ soot chucker, you always had a weird seat position in my opinion!
