dimma02
Anyone who is getting steering replaced, how do they know dealer is not just putting standard mk5 steering into GTI. Bad move if VW know its a problem but I cannot see a whole new steering being the fix, read some of other posts on this.
RedRobin
In summary, the 'grinding' has been described by various drivers here as "slight" and "mild" and no-one really knows yet if it will become a serious problem. As dimma02 says: If the standard Mk5 Golf steering is different from the GTI and is fitted as a replacement only due to customer pressure on the dealer, then the longer term problem could be much more serious. Reading all the posts in this thread so far, I too feel that a new steering is unlikely to be the fix. Hey, dimma - How about some pics of yer front lip Abt? Snoopy
Just been thinking about this thread after a mate come over last night in a 'prototype' pre-production car (not VW) and asked me "as a consumer does or would this noise annoy you" it sounds exactly like what you guys are getting. He said its the brushes on the power steering and the fix they have found is fit ones that have done 4000 miles. I wonder if VW are also having this 'problem'. Just a thought. Matt R
On my demo GTI, I find the grinding noise is only really noticeable in the morning or after the car has been standing all day at work, mine is an 06 model year also!
jamiepointer
My car's been at the stealer's today to fit a new roof lining (damaged on delivery). Also got them to check the noise when turning left. They said they had spoke to VW germany tech department and that a new "modified" steering rack was needed and were aware of the fault. Sounds like a recall is needed! My sealer is now waiting for when the new steering rack will be available.
Matt R
Not heard anything of modified steering racks, i will check tomorrow, I should know I am a Parts Manager for VW!
skifly
sounds interesting - would love to know more esp before my stealer gets back to me about the problem?
mikemod
Just wondering if anyone had got to the bottom of this, mine seems to be getting louder but am reluctant to bring it to the dealer as the car usually comes back with an extra dent or scratch. jacknelle
Had my GTI at the dealers yesterday to investigate this problem. They said that VW acknowledge it and are investigating a fix.

MeMota
Just realised mine does this (1300km on the clock, just started making the noise). Any progress from people who've spoken to their dealer about this?
allanon_1980
from what I hear your better off leaving it alone unless it gets very bad. The stealers seem to be fitting standard mk5 racks instead of gti racks.
SMB
As I understand it the racks are the same, each rack has 5 possible settings for assistance etc
RedRobin
I agree with Barry. If it works don't mend it! At least, not until the issue has much more known about it.
MeMota
Hey, my noise that arrived when I was at 1200km, has gone (now done 2500km). Anyone else had this experience? I think that my steering started being off centre a bit when the noise started... steering still off centre. Will get the dealer to look at it.
