RedRobin
Sources I cannot reveal, inform me that the cure for this problem will be a new modified steering rack, currently being fitted to production line now, stock arriving January/February. RedRobin
Latest news from my same source is that: "The replacement parts are available now in limited supply so be quick! The factory has now authorised dealers to do the work, there will be no recall!" So, if you have this steering problem and want to get it fixed, get on to your dealer asap. bal5sidhu
Collected my GTi last monday - must have missed out on the new rack as factory fitted to all Jan built cars. No problem with the steering yet. should i wait and see or get on a dealer list now on the basis that it makes sense to have the modified rack anyway at some stage? RedRobin
It's best to speak to your dealer and therefore 'log' your awareness but if your car doesn't grind then it would be difficult to get fixed I expect.
SMB
if it grinds it's a fault and although not fixed immediately should be fixed. limited supply means free supply will tak esome time not be quick to get one before they run out. I'm quite happy to see if it fixes the issue first........
bal5sidhu
I'll monitor the situation. after reading all the posts on this i'm holding my breath everytime i have to turn the wheel left at slow speeds waiting for the dreaded noise to appear... jonathansargent
Thnaks - I'll keep an eye - or should that be ear(!) open for it. I am wondering whether VeeDub have fixed the fault on build?
RedRobin
My source further tells me that all cars with a build week of 49 onwards last year (2005) will already have the modified rack fitted.
jonathansargent
Thanks Red Robin - you have some excellent spies!! Hope that mine (delivery in the UK early Feb will be fitted with the re-designed rack. Am i right in thinking that they are now fited with a bee sting aerial and not one in the heated screen? If so - does anyone know which week that modification happened?
RedRobin
IIRC the bee-sting aerial became standard production many moons ago. There's probably a thread on the subject here if you want to Search.

SMB
My dealer just contcated me and asked me to come in for some checks would take 20 mins whilst I wait and they need to do it before they can order the parts, sound right?
bal5sidhu
[ QUOTE ] My source further tells me that all cars with a build week of 49 onwards last year (2005) will already have the modified rack fitted. [/ QUOTE ] Rang the stealer today to find out the build week on my GTi which was delivered last week. When i explained the reason he went quiet then put me on to the service dept.Went through the conversation again. the response? (remember im just asking for a build week number and not complaining about anything). The guy actually raises his voice to say that he works in a vw dealership (i gathered that) and he knows nothing about any recall on MY car. Now, the word "recall" never left my lips. So i explain there is no recall but there is a modified rack and i can give him the part no if he wants but all i want is a build week number for my car - end of story. He then goes off for couple of mins before coming back and telling me that mine was after week 49 (note still no actual answer to the question) but hes being told it might still be affected (by the problem he denies exists). i tell him i'll keep an eye on the situation but hopefully, as its after week 49, it might be ok. he then says "No, you have to get it booked in and it has to go on the ramp cos thats the only way we'll know if its got the new part" (that he's never heard of). Said i'd do that (no fecking way)and called it quits. Don't do themselves any favours do they?
skifly
so what part number are you using as i posted one a while back and dont think got much of a response from the techy guys (better check again now just in case i was being dopey)
nbetts
Right. Just had a phone call from VW. They now have the new steering rack from the Fatherland. The car goes in next Wednesday for the following: New Steering Rack. Lazy Headlight Squirter. Crazy Rear Wiper. Lazy Door Mirrors. They could not book the car in any earlier as they are doing Golf Steering racks all week. I will let you know how I get on.

mulkbear
At my dealer we have started fitting the new modified PAS racks but before the dealer came order a new rack they need the PAS racks modified ECU code and a full "Guilded Fault Finding" print out (1/2 hour job), then the new rack can be fitted, which are a nasty job to fit but after the vehicle has had the new rack fitted it has to have a full wheel alingment check carried out as well.
