njbennett122
I think the bearings have gone in my front left wheel on my 02 1.8T. When rolling slow it sounds very 'clicky' and over bumps I can hear quite a noticable knocking/jerking sound. Does this sound like worn bearings? Are there any tests I can do to further diagnose the problem? If it is bearings, a new set costs around 25 quid. How easy are they to fit? Any assistance on how to replace them (if it is the bearings) would be appreciated. Many Thanks Neal.
trick97
when bearings go, there tends to be a whine on full lock and your steering is affected, i.e. pulling to one side. Has your CV boot split at all recently? Check to see if any grease is lathered around the inner of your wheel, because this could indicate driveshaft: Clicking tends to be signs of a worn driveshaft/CVJ, would get noticeably louder on full lock (depending on which side). njbennett122
Thanks for the comments. I had a quick look the other night, but I don't know enough to be able to diagnose the problem. Don't think its the bearings now though... Seems like something else is loose, worn or broken somewhere If I twist the wheel from side to side (jacked up) there is a tiny bit of movement, but i dont think its comming from the hub. The CV joints seem to be fine, no damage and seem to be clean from oil/grease. Cheers.
