willg60
Got her back, and the MAF seems to have done the trick. Thing is, I'm scared to drive it now just in case I break it again. When I drove it back earlier, I found myself trying to make it replicate the problem, I couldn't put it out of my mind. It's not doing the juddering or misfiring now, but I'm still not 100% if it feels right. I've had the ATF changed and it still seems a little lumpy through the gears - maybe I'm being paranoid? I compare it to my old A8 that only had 4 gears, so it changed gear less... is it fair to say that the 5 speed will change gear a lot more, and in particular the S8, due to sporty box? is that right? johnss8
Will, i've noticed the gearing on the S is lower than the A and does seem to change more so that it's more responcive, is that what you mean?
willg60
Yeah maybe, its just seems a bit lumpy cos it changes a lot... I think maybe I'm asking to much for it to be silky smooth.. ?
johnss8
The gearbox in mine is smooth but you just about tell it changed up and deffinatley changing down
willg60
I mean, it's smooth enough, but, I keep messing with the throttle and I think thats why it's lumpy.. keep trying to see if the problem comes back.

willg60
Yes I think a good run is what it needs, I think it did a fair bit of town driving before I owned it.

Chris_B
If I'm remembering rightly, I'm sure I read somewhere that the ATF pressure is slightly higher in the S8 gearbox to allow for faster shift patterns. I could be dreaming it, but it might explain why the S8 feels a bit harsher on gear changes? Have you tried changing on the Tip? I think the programming in Tip mode tries to keep the converter lockup clutch locked as much as possible, where in D or S it will slip the clutch and ride the torque convertor. A bit of low-rpm upshifting and downshifting on Tip might help identify clutch clunkyness against torque convertor roughness. Probably just me waffling, but might be worth a try. willg60
STOP waffling !! I'm pi$$ed. Anyhow, I might tuck in to the Audi day on Sat... Sounds like Audi Heaven, lets hope theres some dirty birds there too...
Botang
It may have been a little lumpier to start with as all the fluid would have drained out of the valves especially id they did an output test. It may also be relearning your driving style so give it a couple of weeks then see how it is.

willg60
Well, I've taken her out today and I've given her a damn good hiding... and .. shes definately better, no missfires when going in a straight line, and seems to change gear as she should. BUT, it's definitely still not right. When going round corners at about 30 mph with slight acceleration, it's like it doesn't know what gear to select- the result being judder. Also, when decelerating into a bend it thumps pretty hard on the change down. I really am not sure what to do... I love the car, but I cant be doing with another trip to the stealers. It's cost me over a grand in the 2 weeks I've had it ! I think there could be a phuk off gearbox rebuild bill looming on the horizon.... poo phukin hoo... eeeerrr! b0llocks..... Saw another S8 actually just a minute ago... nice dark blue facelift, and he waved !!
Ska
Oh oh is the rough change down from2nd to 1st cos. my car is doing the same and a ATF change didn't do it any good. I'm looking to get it rebuilt as well but don't know who to turn to for good quality work but won't ripp me off.

PaulW
If you have a facelift car, you have to readapt the throttle position sensor after a MAF changeout, very, very important. Hopefully this will solve your problem. Here's the procedure: http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/throttlebody.html

PaulW
I'm not sure, at this point I would hook up vag-com and see if there are any stored faults in the engine or transmission control module. Or I would disconnect the battery for a while to reset the TCU, or just reset the TCU by disconnecting it in the electronics box. Make sure you have the radio code before you start! willg60
Where is the TCU box, is it easy to get at ? could that be causing problems with the gear changes ?
