Yes, you read the thread title correctly.

I've just discovered that a person who runs a very well known BMW forum is swapping his new M5....for a 130i.

Finances aren't the issue either and I'm trying to get the full detail as to why - but the M5 has left him wanting from what I can tell so far, and the 130i is supposedly a stunning drive...

Thought I'd pass it on and I'll try to get some more information.

Got a bit more information on this now.

He says that the M5 simply isn't involving enough - and that it's speed is masked so well that it is detrimental to the fun the car offers.

He also says that he 130i will be more suited to 'lanes' (presuming country) that he simply cannot have fun in with the M5 because of the size of the car. He used to have an M3 CSL and he's very clear in stating that the 130i is a lot more fun to drive than the M5 and much closer to the CSL in terms of the total driver package.

He's specced it up to a whopping £33k too. Another point has been the fact that he's doing different mileages and finding that the M5 is becoming a cash-cow absorbing silly money each month when he doesn't get any fun out of it.

It's not the first M5 I've seen traded in for something more radical either - and there is another guy elsewhere who has gone back to an M3 CSL after buying an M5.

I know I said from my driving of the car that it wasn't what I expected. Whilst power is extreme it left me wanting in both experience and looks.

The 130i is getting some rave reviews in terms of its driver reward and enjoyment mind you.

Not sure I could spec one up to £33k but it's each to their own I guess and if it ticks all the boxes then why not.

Its odd becasue Autocar had it against the F430 in the lanes and said it was virtually as good!

I know what he means by big cars absorbing the power, I have driven an S600 bi-turbo many times and that just eats up the speed (probably similar perfomance to an M5) but you just dont feel it. It makes a much duller ride!

Its why the MX-5 is so much fun, its not fast but you can enjoy it more, theres more feedback.

Its exactly why I found the S3 underwhelming even compared to a Fiesta, it was massively quick by comparision, but I just didn't notice.

Half the fun is in the involvement, in an RS6, M5, S600, etc you get from A-to-B extremely quickly, in something fun you get from A-to-A, via B, C and D wink.gif

this is why i'm so tempted to keep the s2k now (even though i could do with the equity for something else!) the speed and fun factor of the S2 is just too much and i cant wait to battle my way through the winter coming with just rear wheel drive with no traction control EEK2.GIF
