RFT
The scoops have been moved onto the website, which makes a certain amount of sense. not that Car was running many scoop photos before this redesign. there are a couple of good articles in this month's issue- Kacher's Veyron bit is pretty good, and the 599 with steve coogan is a good read, not for the "crossing continent iun a supercar" but, which we've read a thousand times before, but for coogan's musings on the nature of petrolheadedness. On the other hand, they still employ Stephen Bayley. the rot at car started the first time he got in... and the "Icon" article about ferdinad porsche seems like a retread of setright's "Great Engineers" series from the early 90s... Car was the first car mag I ever bought (november 1991 "the new rovers you may never get to buy" or something like that). I bought it in a services on the way to St Etienne for an exchange trip, and I would have been 14 at the time., and I've been on-and-off reading it ever since. It's worth pointing out, though, that Car (propbably) were one of the first mags to do crap car challenges so beloved of Top Gear these days- I remeber 2 from the early 90s- one with 4 cars (mid-sizers) where goodwin bought a strada that dies on the dragstrip- that was spead over a few months, and another (related to the comeback of coupe's with some car's launch or other. might have been the probe) where they had to buy a 2-door coupe for 750: onwe bought a capri, and the other an early RX-7. I lost my back issues in house moves a long time ago
Mollox
Hi Rich CAR makes me laugh these days. The new format is a bit of a joke but its only because they got themselves into such a pickle by going all leftfield with the last redesign. I can remember thinking a year or so ago that CAR really had it right. Then it went all comic book and now they've tried to make a return to where they were - without actually going back to where they were because that would be seen as a retreat. And also because EVO snaffled up the good bits from that niche. I don't like the way they've said they have to reinvent themselves because they're always being copied. They've had to reinvent themselves because they let someone from Loaded redesign the magazine and in a sweep it probably lost them half their readership. Now they've had to carve a new 'niche' because they vacated the comfy seat they've occupied for so long of their own accord and now someone's gone and moved it. You'd better all go out and buy the new half-sized screen laptops from Korea because we're sick of being imitated and will be launching the new half-size, coffee table friendly web format soon.... Problem_Child
[ QUOTE ] The scoops have been moved onto the website, which makes a certain amount of sense. not that Car was running many scoop photos before this redesign. [/ QUOTE ] What the hell good is that to me on the 7:12 to Euston? Autocar may have gone a bit too What Car? for my liking but at least the scoops are still in the magazine. So is this redesign JB's idea or an act of desperation then? It would be interesting to compare the circulation figures of Evo to Car over the last few years- ever since Rob Munro-Hall left I think it's been reactive rather than proactive in its editorial. The current state of Car saddens me. It was the first Magazine I bought on a regular basis and my ambition in life at 15 was to be editor. Nowadays I'd rather work for Evo. Oh and Mollox- you're 110% right. Better than I could ever put it.
Betaphile
[ QUOTE ] What about Motorsport? That's still enjoyable. Simon Taylor, Marcus Pye and Bill Boddy are good journalists.. Pus I disagree with the above comments about Octane - I generally find it to be fairly well written. Some of the celebrity columnists can be a little odd, but they get swapped reasonably regularly. Part of the appeal of any magazine is going to be the subject matter though, and I am interested primarily in vintage and classic cars, and historic racing. It also has a nice twist in that it concentrates alsoon stylish things with an automotive link, so you get some interesting articles about watchmakers, or artists, and the like. [/ QUOTE ] I regard Motorsport as in a different part of the market to CAR, Autocar etc. It's not bad but I preferred the older style (we're talking 10+ years ago) with the then-current F1/rally/sportscar reviews. As it is, it's much more like a motor-racing-oriented version of C&SC. I can live with that but if I had a preference I'd like it to focus more on the here-and-now. Octane doesn't strike me as anything particularly special at all. @ RichTysoe, I fondly recall the 'Crap Car Cup'. Strada vs R9 vs James May in the Visa - top stuff! The (I think) Cougar competition with the Cortina vs Crapi to Monaco was great as well...
Ari
I've only just got this months Car Magazine so not read it all yet, but I have to be honest (having started this anti-Barlow thread) and say it looks awesome! Looks like there are some top articles and some great design. Looking forward to this one more than any in a long time and if it reads as well as it looks so far this could finally tip me over to getting a subscription. Nice one Jason. Mollox
Ari if it reads as well as it looks the world is doomed! I meant to add that losing GBU was a silly thing to do. There was so much humour packed into so few words there, with subtle variances from time to time, it always kept me chuckling.
Ari
Sh!t, the GBU has gone!!!???? As I say Ive only just got it and not read it yet. Please strike the above from the record in that case, and reinstate Barlow to Cock status ASAP! The GBU was CAR.
Problem_Child
The GBU went walkies once before. It came back a short while later after a storm of protest. Don't worry, it will be back.

Problem_Child
[ QUOTE ] Good Bad and Ugly, I'm guessing. [/ QUOTE ] Spot on. My favourites? The Volvo 240 was described as an "antique car for antique dealers", while they summed up the Maestro as "Austin for the 80's (90 year olds will like it too)"... inspec71
I used to love Car magazine. Had a massive stack of them dating back to the late 80's (when I was 10, developing a love of cars by gleaning all kinds of useful information from car mags). Now Car magazine is so sh*t I want to buy it only to cut each glossy, trendy page into four pieces and use it to wipe my arsehole. What happened to Intersection magazine? That was even f*cking worse! Mollox
I can honestly remember, once upon a time, thinking "this really is the best car magazine there is". It was a really long time ago.
