Stifler
Hi, The passenger window on my Golf MKIV doesn't close on the auto setting. When I pull the button right up it starts to close, when it gets to 3/4 it then opens fully again. I can only seem to close it in the manual mode. Can anyone help? Cheers
micko2602
Sounds like the mechanism is on its way out. Common fault on the mkiv. Eventually it will go all together and the window will drop. If i remember right its a cheap plastic part that goes costs about £8 and if VW fit it about £150 Labour. My old mkiv had similar symtoms before the window dropped totally and it needed fixed so It reasonable to assume it could be the same part. Rustynuts
Sounds more like it's an electonic problem, as it closes properly on manual. Try some silicon lubricant on the rubbers to ease the window movement, it may be catching and triggering the anti pinch feature. When the glass gets tight in the rubbers, the plastic clips break trying to close the window against the resistance.
jonboy3020
spray guides with silicon spray, its just the rubbers sticking, common problem. Also try operating the self closure system with the key on the drivers door lock, hold the key turned in the lock position with the windows down, should close themselves

jon69
Whatever u do DONT "toggle" window switch Up an Down to free window when iced up like i used to do either!! i used to do this bad habit to release windows when iced up and thus heard "crack" and passenger window dropped into door at -4 degrees in Aberdeen!! small cheap white plastic clip was expensive culprit and vw sell replacement "window pack" at premium but with stronger metal clips as replacement, another "known" common issue which is expensive lol! i fitted part myself as not too complex to fit but time consuming thats all. Mollox
I agree with Rustynuts - its not symptomatic of the fecking "window dropping problem". If that was the case you'd hear the 'bang' of one clip breaking and it'd be a day or so before the other gave way. Rubbers sticking sounds right - the window sounds like its detecting 'resistance' and its the safety measure kicking in thinking there's something in the way of the window. micko2602
If its down to "electronics" are you suggesting that you can only jam someones head in the window in manual mode and not in automatic mode. Surely the system is looking for excessive torque on the motor at all times.
