Looking for a decent steering wheel lock to stop the little b**tards nicking my partners daughters new car (she still hasn't got the old one back) and because of her age 21, its not worth claiming on the insurance due to car not worth more than £500 and losing her NCB's would cost her more than that in the long term, so I've just sorted her a new car (old fiesta) out and I want something that will deter the opportunist's from steeling this one and I thought the best thing that doesn't cost an awfull lot would be a steering wheel lock, but which is the best? 169144-ok.gif

i reckon this kind of thing is pretty good cos it is quicj and easy to fit and to store in the car plus seems pretty effective.

Price: £39.50

Attack time: 47 seconds

Although the Stoplock Pro looks very similar to the firm's Original, it's a meatier device, and has been given a security rating by independent testing body, Thatcham. It's pretty tough, too. The sturdy arms were resistant to boltcutters, and the lock mechanism was well armoured. However, its weakest point was that the steering wheel itself was vulnerable. The eventual removal came from a mix of lock and wheel attack, and we had to make plenty of noise.

Yep, I thought maybe the disklok 169144-ok.gif

I'll pop into Halfords later and try a few out to see how easy they are to put on and off, like Ari said the temptation to not use it would there if its too awkward or heavy especially for a young gal.

Has the car got an airbag ? I often think about cars having a quick-release wheel (like f1 cars) and taking the steering wheel off completely !

you really want to go shopping or to the cinema or whatever with a car steering wheel in your hand?? grin.gif

I can't remember wether its got an airbag or not, I'll have a look later. I doubt it because its an L reg fiesta.

She could start a new craze at uni with a steering wheel matching her handbag and shoes. jump.gif

It is always an option though, thanks for the advise 169144-ok.gif

I can get you a Disklok a bit cheaper than Halfords if you want - drop me a PM and i'll see what i can do.

I have one - it's good - strong - but it does take up a lot of space and rattles about in the boot a bit. I keep mine behind my drivers seat, wedged in amongst a load of paperwork and empty drinks bottles and crisp packets etc.

Not a rubbish idea at all. I was going to do this with my first car (H reg Astra) but before I had chance to afford it, some fecker nicked it!! Who's going to even entertain breaking into a car when it has no steering wheel? They'd walk past and nick a different one.

Interesting idea, I reckon - you wouldn't necessarily have to take the whole steering wheel with you. It could be removed and then the central hub detached and taken with you, leaving the main body of the wheel in the car. Nothing too bulky to carry round and a car that is effectively undriveable.

Mines a mixture of my paperwork - everytime i look @ a project for work (as a Civil Engineering Quantity Surveyor), I have a big pile of drawings on my seat. When someone gets in, i simply throw then onto the floor in the back.

Any packets or wrappers are from my Mrs or nephews. I'm not even allowed to burp in her car!! frown.gif

Disklock is what I use - only downside is that it... does take up a fair bit of room.

Plus you must resist simply dropping it into the passenger footwell when not in use. Crash and roll the car and you risk it braining you! Would be very ironic to be killed by a 'safety' feature in the event of an accident. I wedge my 'Metro' style stop under the back of the passenger seat.

You're joking aren't you? I watched a TV program with the best and the worst steering locks on the market, and it only took about 1:30 mins tops for a professional thief to remove the hardest one!

Not pointless, as they are a deterrent. If you're using one and you're parked next to a car without one, they'll more likely nick that car. But as an anti-theft device? Pointless.

Thanks Simon, but I've already bought it. 169144-ok.gif

Hopefully she can finish her final year at uni without asking her mum to pick her up every week smirk.gif
