ECU upgrade

Hi There,

I hope someone can help me. I recently asked my local dealer to supply the latest (6463?) ECU upgrade to my Golf r32. The disk that VW sent them was labelled 'Golf R32 ECU update' but no numbers were shown on the face of the disk.

After it was downloaded I must admit the car felt much quicker low in the rev range and I'm delighted but is there any way I can check to see which upgrade it was?

I've been told that if you press the cold air, fan down and ECON together and cycle to number 30 with the hot and cold keys it tells you what ECU you have downloaded. Mine showed 221. Should it have not said 6463?

Cheers

Welcome to Tyresmoke Sugari 169144-ok.gif

The readout on the climate control is not the same. The only way to check (without standing over the VW tech at your main dealer) is to get someone to use VAG-COM, which is a software programme you can load onto a PC (normally a laptop) and plug into the port just above the ashtray using the cable that comes with the VAG-COM software. If you don't have a friend with a copy of this, you could try your local VW specialist, as most of them use this, rather than the VW system.

You should probably assume, however, that the car has had the upgrade applied, if it is going that much better. Based on an original 237 bhp, the 6463 update normally hikes this up by around 10 bhp.

Cheers Mook,

The reason I went for the upgrade was because of the lapse low down in the rev range but also, when doing full blooded 1st gear accelerations it seems like the fuel gets cut around 5700-6200. This hasn't been altered by the download. I'm guessing this is a VW safety measure to stop idiots bashing into the rev limiter in 1st? OR does this sound like a sole problem with my R32?

10BHP extra is very believable from the upgrade, certainly the car got to 130MPH very quickly post download ( I'm based on the Isle of Man where this is actually legal in areas with no speed limit ).

The car should rev smoothly right round to 6800 or so rpm (can't remember any more when the rev limiter kicks in on a standard R32), although there's little point in taking it past 6000 rpm as it's reached peak power by that point and the gear ratios are close enough to keep you within the power band. The advantages of coupling a 6 speed box with the fantastic torque of the 3.2 V6... smile.gif

The perceived drop in power/torque could be caused by a MAF sensor which is on its way out. It's very hard to tell as they are very inconsistent in the way that they fail - slowly or quickly, low end or top end.

Don't panic - it's a £75 replacement item and, if your car is still covered by warranty, it will be replaced free of charge. I would suggest you stick with it for now - if you notice any loss of power over the next couple of weeks, then get it booked back in again.

Hi & welcome

I had mine 'done' by VW due to the flat spot problem, the rev limits are still the same...about 6100 in 1st and about 6400 / 6500 in the others (6th ? crazy.gif)

The throttle mapping is more agresive & the knock sensors don't seem to get involved as often...it's a good fix IMHO

Thanks very much gentlemen.

I had no idea that the rev limit was lower in first than in the other gears, perhaps this might be the problem. I'll watch really carefully when the drop in power occurs. I felt it was in the late fives though rather than spot on six or six one. Second through fifth gears are fine to redline at six five, I have not tried going into the redline to see where the limits are on these gears AND I havn't come close to redlining it in sixth..............yet!

I know Imprezas and Focus RSs restrict first gears so I wasn't too worried with it. But after previously owning an Integra Type R which has to have one of the quickest first gears I've ever experienced ( Subarus and Evos included ) I've found myself upshifting much earlier to avoid the drop in power, but this must cost performance off the lights. I may try it without the ESP on and see if there is any difference.

As for the Isle of Man, yea its great at the right time on the right roads. Most people drive at normal respectable speeds so finding a clear road to really open a car up on is tough, but can be rewarding!

I'm sure you can't redline the R in any gear in a standard R as the limiter kicks in, i never got close to it when my R was standard as it kicks in to protect the engine, tho i could be wrong but i'm pretty positive, isn't the limiter at 6300RPM or something like that which isn't near the redline! I'm sure someone with the correct info will pipe up and tell me if i'm right or wrong.

IIRC, the car doesn't / can't reach the rev limiter in 6th. When en route to LM04 (and therefore abroad) a little test was carried out by moi in the last .:R32, and the car pretty much max'd out around 6200 in 6th.

Having said this, I was more intent on whatching the road than the limiter, and at the speed I couldn't sense any more acceleration, so I came off the gas, maybe it would have kept on rising through the rev range, only very slowly??
