Huss
Guys My 8 has developed a loud groaning sound when I turn the steering wheel. It only happens when I turn left and appears to come from the column itself - although it could be tramsmitting from anywhere in the steering I suppose? It was intermittent but now is there virtually 100%. It not rubbing around the cluster as I moved it up/down/in/out etc to no avail. I've checked the fluid level and that is spot on - so no leak in the rack itself I suspect. Before carting it to the stealers, any pointers as to what it might be? At least it'll give me a fighting chance in the diagnosis discussions. Tks,
SneakyMcC
Had my 8 over 5yrs. Its nearly always done it. Stealer said change the rack, he can go get fecked! I have a idea about the top of the shock mountings but never explored it. But does indeed sound like he column...
SneakyMcC
Sorry, I was in a rush earlier. I once had the car on axle stands and turned the s/wheel, got a simlar noise (wheels off the ground could change the noise as not got the weight on'em?) and noticed that the tops of the shocks turn in the turrets as the noise is made. If the vibration does come from there, it could be amplified through the column(?). If I am talking out of my chuff, please advise?
Huss
Talking out of your chuff...no way! Indeed the groaning is accompanied by the slightest of vibration through the steering wheel. So slight I didn't think it was worth mentioning. But now you have....????? PaulW
One thing that's easy and inexpensive is to try changing the PS fluid: http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/susp_whls_brake_steer/psflush.html Mine started groaning when cold coming out of the garage, I have to do this! Ska
I've had some groaning noises in the car, got the steering fluid changed and never had a problem. But the other day it came back so I asked the wife to use her own car from now on
Huss
Sorry for not responding fellas...been away for a few days. So the consensus is to change the fluid eh? Well it's going in for the dreaded 80,000 mile service before Christmas so I may as well yet add another bit of work to the long... list. BTW off topic but is it true that the thermostat is behind the water pump? If so it surely makes sense to have that changed along with the pump and belts? The reason I ask is I've never heard anyone mention it. Thanks for the steering tip fellas I'll let you know how I get on! regards,
crasher
Huss Had the thermostat replaced at the same time as the pump and belts. As it was a pump failure under warranty I made sure the changed all the related gubbins at the same time. All i paid for was the belt parts. Fitting was bundled under the warranty job... Huss
Nice one crasher...lucky g*t The stealer has said that they will change all supplemental belts (air con, pump etc at cost) as they will be taking the front off anyways.. what with the gearbox oil change and a service, plus the steering fluid change I dread to think what this one will cost?? Any advance on £1,200??...
seight
Just had this exact fixed about two weeks ago on my s8. They said it was a tie rod problem, but I don't recall if they said they replaced the tie rod or it was loose, or it was a bad bushing, etc. Hope that helps! Huss
Paul Just had a proper look at that link. This sounds relatively straight forwards. I think I'll have a go at this myself. Thanks for the nod
