Wheel Spacers

I have 10mm at the front and rear and the handling is improved no doubt. But I do have to warn you that there is a good chance my rear diff went because of the spacers. For this reason they would not cover the part by warranty costing 3.5k. So they are great but watch out!

Ok Woppum. Do I need to keep an ear out for any strange noises or is there no warning to the diff going? Costs. Well the spacers and extended wheel bolts, including a set of longer McGards locking bolts was £250 from www.performancealloys.com They are H&R spacers and really good quality. I also know that Kim at QSTuning (01444 451542)could do a set, but I only found this out recently, otherwise I would have gone to him. I had the tyres swapped front to rear and the tracking done at the same time as having the spacers fitted (I could have done it but decided to get the other work done) and so that was another £100. Haven't had a chance to test the handling yet but I'm sure there's not much in it, although it did feel slightly less prone to rolling on the odd roundabout on the way home. Probably that 'I've just spent £350 so I hope its made a difference' feeling! 585999-Spacers1.jpg

You are really going to hate me but call Motorspot Tuning ask for either 15mm or 10mm x 150 mm spacers they match to the r32 rims and fit totally flush. They did me a set of 4 x 10mm x 150mm spacers and longer bolts for £122 delivered. Ask for mike. 01375489510. They are the UK importers for H&R kit, everyone else buys off them 169144-ok.gif

Don't panic Dan - the H&R's fit perfectly (as you now know).

I think the problem with Woppum's diff had sweet FA to do with the wheel spacers - this sounds like yet another sh*te excuse from a dealer to get out of warranty work.

The only additional stress you'll be putting on the car is on the wheel hub bearings, as you're effectively moving the "load" of the wheel further out, but up to 15mm is fine. I've got an equation somewhere in a book in the garage that figures out the load put on a wheel bearing based on the track of the vehicle. From my college days learning about mechanical engineering, so I ain't digging that out...

And relaaaxxxxxx.... 169144-ok.gif

Forgive my ignorance Wopps, but why didn't you just remove the spacers before you took it in to the Dealers for inspection?

You're right Tom, I do hate you!!!! Thats a good price. I might call performance alloys and shout at them a bit. Won't get my money back but will make me feel better!! Oh go on Charles, get the equation dusted off and tell me the load on my wheel bearings!!!

This im sure is a good possibility, I just thought i would let you know in case. There was a buzzing sound when cruising that was starting to get worse. It was hard to tell as i had just changed to a silenced miltek so i thought it might just have been a noise that was once overshadowed. When they opened the diff up, there was alot of metal filings...

It's probably under a box which is under another box, which is under the Beetle, which hasn't moved for six years and is under a dust-sheet, which has got a pile of other stuff on top of it.

So, erm, nope! SMOKE6.GIF
