MagiK
Considering an X5, and torn between a 4.4 or 3.0 (petrol). Obvisouly I want the V8, but just wondering what the real world difference in mpg is between the two engines. I know you shouldn't buy a V8 if you're gonna worry about the mpg, but if is not much worse than the straight 6 3 litre, then there's not much in it. Any other buying advice regards to the V8 or straight 6 much appreciated. I'm looking to buy 2nd hand, budget of £25K ish. Yes an X5 is a big change from my current VW R32, but I want comfort and space, something the R is not big on. Cheers
Booster
I just financed an X5 4.4Sport for a customer of mine. 2001 Y plate done 44k, retail deal £19,995. That is trade according to Glass's Guide for that vehicle. For £25k you would get a very nice 4.4 (as unsurprisingly the market for them is limited due to the fuel consumption). FSH is a must, bear in mind how much tread is left on the tyres (they ain't going to be cheap). I know there are issues with the auto box on diesels as a few customers have had problems but haven't heard of any problems with the petrol models. Manual models and those without the comms pack get hammered when it comes to p/x time so if you aren't bothered about getting an auto and can live without satnav you could get a "bargain" one. loddrik
MPG is not too much difference between 3.0 and 4.4. Only buy a Sport model too.
gizze
A mate has had a sport for 2 years and just got the 4.8i and he says he has gone from around 19mpg down to 18mpg.
Chav
I was surprised how much the big engined ones have dropped in value when comparing prices the other week... They're a bargain (if you can afford the petrol!)

loddrik
I nearly was, conmsidering I pay £165 a month to insure the Alpina whilst an X5 would cost me £60! For the amount of miles I do nowadays the 4.4 would have made as much sense as any too.

MagiK
So a 4.4 lets say, thats got between 45 and 55k on the clock, are there any known problems, or things to look for?
loddrik
I'd not worry buying a 4.4 with twice that on it, as long as depreciation over 100k is not an issue for you, but that would be offset by the cheaper purchase price anyway.
