fudge Posted November 19, 2005 Report Share Posted November 19, 2005 Tobes, I have bought 2 Medion computers from Aldi (still using the second one) and I reckon that they are very good value for money when you examine the spec in detail and the quality of the motherboard/components used. Of course, it does depend exactly what you want to use them for. This new machine from Aldi has (according to the spec) 3 dual tuners - Sat/freeview(digital)/analogue(ordinary terrestrial) so that you can watch one program whilst recoding another. A SCART socket making it very easy to connect to a TV, it has a remote control so that it is ideal to use as a digital video recorder and 8 channel audio. It also has WiFi (802 11g) as well as both 2 x firewire and multiple USB 2 sockets and both wireless keyboad/mouse. My existing Medion (8083) model is very quiet and, judging by the spec, this new one should be quieter still great if you want to use it near the TV. To be fair, AMD processors can be (slightly) faster for gaming but Pentiums are usually rated better for video processing (eg resizing a DVD or video processing from a digital video camera). It comes with a 3 year warranty - I have not needed to use the warranty on mine but hard disk and CD/DVD writer failures are not uncommon after about a couple of years (as a hobby I repair computers for friends and work colleagues and often have to replace these items). Finally, it comes with a good software package of serious programs rather than the usual junk bundled with many computers. I would be interested to see the price of a Dell specced up to match. I would agree that someone looking for a basic computer for office type work/web surfing cannot do much better than Dell - You can get a Dell Dimension 1100 with a 2.5 GHz Celeron, 80 GB hard drive, CDRW/DVD drive, 512 MB memory, Windows XP Home and a 15 inch TFT monitor for £299 delivered including VAT. However it stops being a bargain if you try to up the spec; they want £58 for a DVD writer which can be bought for £30 or less elsewhere. If you're running high end 3D modelling packages then you may need something more. The CAD software should detail what the minimum specification is for a graphics card I would have thought. " That's ridiculous. Try speccing one up, it'd cost you far more. You can spec up their equivalent, I presume the 9150 although they don't tell you the details of the chassis etc., for the same price, and you're missing all the extras, have a lesser gfx card and a 1 year rtn to base warranty. No wireless, no tv cards, extra £ if you want firewire.. etc.. Add the equivalent "at home" warranty, and the fact that you have to buy a monitor you may not want too, and it's pushing a grand or more. Tobes, Medion are a huge company in Europe, and have a good reputation. Their components are sound by all accounts, for example RichardW mentioned CD/DVD units, in the MD8800 they are both Sony, and the wqriter has LightScribe so you can flip the cd and burn an image / text onto it when you're done. It is built on the new BTX standard chassis, meaning it's cooler, smaller and quieter. The gfx is a slightly diff spec'd up 6600GT. I love the databay feature, although when I buy one thursday I wont be able to afford the extra 99 for the 250gb unit to go in it. maybe sometime. I wish people would stop judging these PCs by where they're sold. It'd be fine if they were mail order I suppose? (oh yeah - Dell: £60 delivery please...) See you at Aldi. I know it comes with XP home edition, but i want to change this to media center if I can. I know media center is a bit "picky" on the type of hardware it has at its disposal. Also I noticed it has coax/optical out connections. Does this mean it will connect to an external amp and register the sound as Dolby digital 5.1 ?. even better, will it recognise DTS sound ? (easy £1000+ if built yourself - oh and never build your own machine, its not worth it) This is only my 2 cents but any one buying consider Dell - 1 year collect and return warrranty is standard (in configuration untick 3yr warranty - takes about £100 of price), free delivery on most.. It's been solid and reliable, if a little heavy, but has USB, firewire, digital sound. TV out etc, well specced for 1K nearly 4 years ago. The cheapest system you could build outside the outlet with a Pentium 4 3.0GHz and a 19" TFT monitor would be £865, and with only an 80GB hdd, CD-RW, 512MB memory, etc. Are you sure you didn't mean a 17" monitor as that is only a £90 option rather than £250.... I even got a cardreader and a soundcard that wasn't even on the original spec sheet as bonus atems. They test them to be as good as new and you still get a warranty. I paid for 1 years on site so any problems are sorted hassle free. They aren't doing too well at the moment sales wise thus the bargains in the Outlet at the moment. Makes sure if anyone does do it you add it into the basket. You then get extra money off and free delivery. There is also the option for a good wireless keyboard for £25... Seems good to me. Dell systems are great value!.. but I think the on-site support is overpriced, considering most systems will never fail. Removing the unneeded crap from the price, makes them astonishing value I'd say. Only users with non-mainstream requirements need to consider bespoke-build machines nowadays IMO!
