DIY Coilpack swap?

Hmm..was going to get a local VAG specialist to do it..was even going to ask them to come and do it at mine as I didn't fancy driving 1/2 a mile to them on 3 cylinders...

What do you think? Does a dealer need to do it or is this bread and butter for a half decent mechanic? There just seems to be a lot for them to rememebr to do! (!)

What side is #4 on? Left or Right?

I've just had a good look at those instructions and they're fiddly but not that hard it seems. However, I don't really have any tools here, and have just seen that a Torque wrench is £50 from Halfords EEK2.GIF

Which I can't get to either smashfreakB.gif

ive done no.3 myself , its easy enough to do.

to get to 3, is the same as getting to 4.

cylinders for a RHD are left to right. ie drivers side to passenger. On a leftie, your guess is as good as mine.

Id start with assuming the same, if fault doesnt go, you got the wrong end tongue.gif

only have to remove a bracket with the N249 valve on top.

N429 btw is the valve that controls the DV.

the nuts you take off are not critical, so I wouldnt and didnt bother to torque them up.

However if i was doing something like spark plugs I would have invested in one.

I do have a torque wrench for wheel bolts but with a range of between 50 - 225 Nm its a bit of an overkill!

10nm is next to nothing, just nip them up.

I was told by an Audi Roadside bloke that they would always come out to coilpack failures on cars that were built with the dodgy ones even after warranty had expired. I had all four of mine go on my old 1.8TQ and then one of the replacement ones (which turned out to be one of the dodgy ones confused.gif f or g I think the indicator letter was) went as well SAUER0421.GIF

i would have thought you be ok, just go steady.

Ive turned round and driven same 1/2 mile home before when they have gone, but not any further.

Dodgy coils were around the " H " coding. I have no idea what the latest revision is, and its too darn cold to go and look. tongue.gif

Ack, how annoying. I'm planning on getting it dealt with by a well-known VAG specialist - thing is they're precisely 0.5 miles from me. Do you think it will be ok to drive it for 1/2 a mile misfiring and on 3 cylinders? SAUER0421.GIF

I had one fail whilst bombing around Donington on a track day back in 2003 in a previous S3 - Under fear of the Audi Overlords and warranty/car abuse, I drove in limp mode from the track at Donington Park to the nearest services on the M1 (about 5 miles away) and then rang Audi roadside assistance.

Don't worry - it will be fine!

Si, did yours actually go into limp mode? Mine is running on 3 cylinders and sounds like a WW1 biplane and really struggles for power. I've been in limp mode before and that was at smooth but totally underpowered...

aye it did - limp mode and lumpy running - ECU warning light on also. Must say the moment it happened on the track, I shat myself thinking 'TURBO' as that was the day JR's turbo gave up big style on his old RS4.

Simon, I remember that day at Donnington. That wasnt a good day for Audi!

yep that's right, you stayed with me for a while at the services. Apart from JR's, I seem to remember a few more casualties or is senality starting frown.gif

coils, turbos, and a close call with some floating brakes.

all good fun and games. ECLIPSe.gif

glad none of it was mine grin.gif see there is a reason for not doing track days wink.gif

ah yes - brakes was Andy's car yes? Was that the day the Lancia integrale came off the track when the wheel came flying off?

Even with about 72bhp available, the Rover offered no resistance to the S3 once prone...

The Rover did however seem a bit peeved being stuck behind me as I limped up the hill, rattling away trying to get to a safe place to stop.

Here's hoping it all gets resolved relatively simply tomorrow crazy.gif
