AnArtist1
My S8 is allergic to sub zero temperatures!! It sounds like an "Arctic Ice Breaker" when the chassis flexes, it makes loud alarming cracking noises mainly from the rear roof area!!? The picture shows the temp display after starting the car in -4 C, the digits Look like something out of Predator!!!!! Another time the entire dashboard was only half illuminated!!! Re-starting the car has fixed these quibbles but has anyone had odd effects due to freezing temps? (Never had any winter hassles in the A8 Sport)

Fulliautomatix
That is odd indeed. My car was sitting out in subzero all day today (-16°C) and had no problems. It has also been exposed to -23°C before with no problems. One solution would be to move somewhere warmer!

Botang
I do notice more noise from the chassis when its been freezing, like just now for instance but it tends to be the suspension I think.

Ska
I got the cracking of the ice on the roof this morning and when ever there is sub-zero temperatures but I don't get the hieroglyphics or should I say Klingon writing. Something else I got this morning was a wierd noise and vibration from the steering mech. when the car warmed up it went... do you reckon this is a prelude to yet another prob. may be with the servotronic set-up? Fulliautomatix
[ QUOTE ] -16/-23! Where'dy heck are'ya? [/ QUOTE ] Northern midwest US... coldest I've seen here was Christmas day a few years ago when we had a solar eclipse on the same day. -32°C! If I remember my materials classes properly, I think Aluminum has a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than steel, which means it is more susceptible to dimensional changes with extreme temperature deviations. There have been instances where glass has fallen out of Aluminum window frames with sloppy tolerances in the years before they took these factors into proper account. It is quite plausible that fits have become tighter and gasketing materials have hardened sufficiently to cause some extra squeaks & rattles.
