Xedos
Hi, This is my first post on here, about one month ago I ordered a 2 TFSI quattro A3 6sp manual and other than it weighing about 80kg more than its FWD counterpart I was wondering how much slower it will actually be than the FWD in a straight line. Im aware that 4wd transmissions account for upto a 40% loss for wheel power than the 20-25% that FWD tranmissions lose and this would make for quite a difference between two identical engines with 200ps @ the flywheel with say a potential differnce of 120@wheels vs 160@wheels!! which one would presume that the quattro is infact quite a lot slower on the road. Audi quote similar 0-62mph figures and similar top speeds yet if the previous is true the quattro would actually be quite a bit slower? Does anyone have any real experience of the two to be able to compare? Wouldnt this mean that a remapped 240hp quattro would only be as fast as a FWD 200hp car? Any thoughts? Scotty
I don't know about A3's but on TT's a 190bhp FWD is about the same as a 225bhp AWD assumming that you're going in a straight line and have good traction.
Cupramax
They're virtually identical because the Quattro runs a slightly shorter set of ratios and hence makes up for the weight difference. Haldex only supplies power to the rear wheels when required so normal power loss figures dont quite apply either, only the extra weight. Mines remapped and is as quick as my old Leon Cupra R and way better off the line...
DannyB
I`ve had a SEAT Leon cupra which was front wheel drive and that car seemed quicker than my current Audi A3 Quattro. The Leon had 180bhp with ESP, 6 speed and got the power down great in the dry but not so much in the wet! This A3 Quattro I have now has the same 180bhp but only 5 speed. It put`s the power down fine in wet and dry but has to detect a front wheel slip before it transfers more drive to the rear wheels. Still prefer the A3 though! DannyB
The AUDI is 1380kg the Seat Leon was about 1300kg so about 80kg`s difference.
blix
i would agree with cupramax the haldex cluth that governs the fourwheel split sends most of the power to the front wheels untill they loose traction.given the great british weather i think your better off in a quattro car.you will certainly beat most cars away at the lights when its pissing down and feel more sure footed. Colmartin
I've got the TDi 2.0 Quattro and my initiall feeling was that it was a little heavy but it's bedded in now and feels rather swift (for a TDi) The times you notice it the most is in the wet and when the snow and ice hits, in those conditions, there is nothing better! cosmicblue
The Quattro is faster than a FWD..........in terms of needing a visit to fuel filling station owing to the Quattro fuel tanks being smaller.....
Cupramax
Errr, bigger you mean??? Quattro has 60 litre tank as opposed to 55..
Chav
[ QUOTE ] Errr, bigger you mean??? Quattro has 60 litre tank as opposed to 55.. [/ QUOTE ] is that right? I thought quattro usually meant a smaller tank.... eg. in A4, FWD tank is 70 litres, and quattro tank is 63.
d3fy
I thinks its more like 50ltr, as it costs me around £52 to fill it up
