Can't see that 272 bhp is that special

[/ QUOTE ]

Isn't this the problem. We are all a nation obbsessed by stats and 'on paper' figures. 300bhp might shave a few 10th's of a second off, but it will dramatically change the way the engine behaves and responds.

Audi have taken the brave step now to try and go back to lighter weight cars and not enter into a bhp war like the one raging between BMW and Mercedes.

Wait and see what they come up with. A few Alli panels (that's the rumor) and a well tuned engine should make for a cracking car. 169144-ok.gif

I was a bit dubious of the new S3 when I heard about it because you assume it's going to be heavier, as normally the successor is, therefore making the power increase academic but now I agree with Le man. A sorted chassis, revised 40/60 quattro, lighter weight and more bhp (which I'm sure when remapped will be over 300bhp anyway) will deliver a spot on motor. After all, is the 8L S3 really a dog with it's 225bhp and 95/5 quattro? Personally I don't think so. Surely the new S3 will be so much more. Also, a remapped new S3 must be monster quick? 169144-ok.gif

Just need to see the bank mananger now! beerchug.gif

How do you measure "almost" though? wink.gif

...with me not personally being able to tell which one is faster.

(i drive both regularly BTW)

However, that said... (and i know i'm setting myself up for the firing squad here) my GTI with DSG feels faster than my 3.2 with manual.

But i would only compare like for like wink.gif

so who's going to have a bet on the new S3 having the new 40/60 quattro system?

I bet it won't. especially if the new TT does not have it from launch. 169144-ok.gif

Me neither. I recon the haldex 40/60 is another internet myth much like the much vaunted DSG torque limit which has never been proven.

Sorry didn't make myself clear enough.

I'm interested in the technology of being able to do x y or z and how that goal is achieved.

Frankly these days who cares if it is 210 225 or 272, it's largely academic -- if it isn't you are unlikely to have your licence for very long shocked.gif

Unless it has a larger Garrett turbine the 272 bhp is going to be it..... it could , maybe, just be a 'factory' chip to 272 bhp.

Now if it has a larger turbine ......... grin.gif then 300 + is surely possible.

Yes it will be quick but it also needs to be efficient.

It also needs the 40/60 split , bet it will arrive - eventually- but not in year one.

It also needs the arches from the S3 and a better front panel - but it's a mule so looks like an ordinary A3 so people like us don't look twice. Lehman is probably the worlds best photographer for spy shots, and the companies know that

If I recall correctly the Haldex can cope with full RWD and FWD drive but with alot of modifications.... FWD is already possible by removing the Haldex fuse but not advisable.

The Torsen 4WD diff is the one the RS4 has and can cope with 40/60 bias, not sure if the Torex system can be fitted to the S3 and doubt it will...... also 40/60 bias in such a small chassis like the S3 might actually make it handle worse due to the short wheel base....?

Anyway im looking foward to seeing this new S3 is final production form and for the movie clips to start flooding the internet...

Audi should be wise enough to realise that the S3 has always sold well so they have alot to live up to...

I was suprised they went the 2.0 T way and not the V6... but it all makes clear sense.... Audi`s philosipy has changed and weight is a big part of that.

I cant wait.

Riz on the Haldex stuff, IMHO its all down to electronics and how Audi (or Haldex?) program the haldex controller to react. If they wanted a more rear bias then they'll just program it in.

Lets settle this now. we are talking HALDEX here, not fitting TORSEN to the A3/Golf family as this cannot happen due to engine location.

And as the mighty Bison suggests, 99% of us will not use/notice this new rear power bias anyway unless, and I've said this before, unless you are on the track hoofing around.

I've driven Dunc's S3 regularly and his has the Haldex performance part fitted (which reacts a bit faster by sending more power towards the rear) and unless you are really planting it going round a roundabout etc, you cannot tell any difference. 169144-ok.gif

On the issue of the 40/60 split, how is it done on the RS4.. as thats the standard split that is going to be used on that.

They have the tech in production but when it will appear on other models is as yet unknown. They are stating that they are going to develop a 40/60 split for all Quattro cars in the futher to close the gap with BMW in terms of handling response.

Time will tell if they do or now.
