Hatch opener

Something I noticed last time I was at the dealer -- there seems to two different styles of hatch opener on Golf's at the moment. My GTI (delivered late Dec 05) has a relatively flat VW emblem but a lot of the standard Golf's and the Mk5 R32 have a recessed opener.

See following pics from VW Vortex (http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2414926):

Standard Golf and R32 were like this:

My GTI and all the others I've seen are like this:

Question is, what do others here have?

The recessed version probably looks better, but I guess the flattish one is easier to keep clean (less grooves etc).

Is it just me that thinks the first one looks more expensive and of better quality than the second one?

I tend to agree, but the smooth one I think is more practical long term. By that I mean it is nicer to press and won't fill up with dirt/wax etc.

It's hard to say which is the new "standard" though. Seems as though cars are arriving with a mixture.

Jono, I was at Giltrap's on Saturday, they had 3 new R32's and 1 new GTI. Two of the R32's had the recessed badge and one the flat one. Seems to be rather hit and miss and to which one is on the car. I assume they will all similar build dates. IMO the recessed looks more expensive, but would be more difficult to keep clean.

Now checked and mine is smooooth type of badge. Car built 10th July to 06 spec. I reckon VW mass produce such badges for a great many of their vehicles and it's simply that we are in a transition of stock change. I don't know which is the latest version badge though. The smooth is much more practical especially as the hatch's back gets so filthy so quickly.
