I'm really considering getting shot of my golf as it just seems to be a dog! i don't enjoy driving it simply because i just can't trust it not to lose power or cover the road behind with smoke! at the moment is just chugging around and giving me a headache, i'm sure i'm going to lose out if i try and chop it in but we live and learn , i'm really just not sure whether i cut my loses and get rid or i try again to get it sorted, intercooler pipes have been replaced by VW , RAC bloke just stood and looked blank! also a friend who is a mechanic looked pretty much the same! He did mutter something about it being the turbo, It may sound daft but i just have a feeling its going to keep on being a pain, so should it be RIP for the golf?

Was it a new car Kate?

...if so, might be cheaper for you to just keep using it for a bit yet! frown.gif

This is probably a swear word on here but i have to say we have had alot of Vauxhalls, we do have Astra estate dti now which has done 110k other that the effect of putting petrol in it its been a good car nothing has been done other than tyres and brakes, i am thinking maybe i should just get a friggin new astra, but i don't no anyone who has a new one.

I do like a car to have abit of go in it, i need a 5dr its has to be big enough to get all 5 of us in if needs be , i guess i can manage to do around 10k a year but mainly thats just around town shop to shop smile.gif

Kate, before you throw in the towel, get VW to check the pipe that actually comes from the turbo. If this is split, like it was on mine, then it would give you the smoke syndrome and loss of power.

Seeing as you've already had the intercooler pipes replaced,it'll probably be half the price that mine was to repair.

If the turbo pipe isn't at fault then you could be throwing good money after bad,and I would indeed get rid of it.

As has been said previously,if you want 100% reliability Japanese is the only way to go.

O.K,they aren't as nice inside, they don't have the same Germanic build quality, but unless you were very unlucky they certainly won't give you mechanical problems.

If I were you, I'd have another look at sorting the car. If it turns out to be something simple then great. If its not, then look at perhaps trading it it (when its running OK grin.gif).

Most Jap things are pretty reliable, but it were my money, it would be a Skoda Fabia vRS! grin.gif

i will get what you suggest checked, it was smokin really bad before i had the intercooler pipes done, when i got it back it seemed much better and was running ok, that was the week before xmas, the last week or so i have noticed , more so at night but it shouldn't be covering anything unlucky enough to be behind me in soot! the other thing is it was losing power the odd time normally if i was doing about 80, now i feel like the turbo is just not kicking in, i can hear it but its just not got the kick i think it should have, hotdog can you tell me what problems your was having before your pipes were replaced?

I wouldn't chop it in just yet. If you like it, you can probably get it fixed back to normal.

I'd say the pipes are a good bet as to what is causing the smoke.

Then again, smoke is pretty common on these cars, unless it's excessive? Is the car re-mapped or standard?

What rpm does the car lose power at?

It may turn out to be something simple, like a clogged intake that just needs cleaning out. Fairly common at that sort of mileage I'd say, any idea how the previous owner drove it?

Well i'm pretty sure the smoke got alot less, it was really bad, its hard to say whether its excessive i think its alot, my husband thinks it is also, the car is standard, the rpm, to be honest that's not something i pay much attention to, but it tends to be when i really floor it so i guess it would high rpm, but the latest thing i have notice is it to me just hasn't got that kick its just like it picks up real slow, can't you tell i'm female! trying to explain it probably very untechnical terms! smile.gif

Oh it was a company car so that will answer how it was driven 169144-ok.gif

This is the third Golf TDi owner I've heard of in the last couple of weeks who is talking of getting shot! blush.gif

Oh, diesels do tend to smoke a fair bit at full throttle and don't 'get up and go' until over 2K RPM. Have you tried running it on BP Ultimate diesel? I'm sure that my wife's A2 TDi runs better on that stuff.

No i haven't tried it on ultimate would i be right in thinking i would have to run a few tanks worth before seeing any difference?

i think i will get a chap i know look at it and check it over, see if he can find anything a miss he doesn't charge much , i'll just have to see what he thinks, i do like the car but it just seems like a big headache! smile.gif
