Considering an A4 s-line....what are "must have" ?

Well admittedly the E46 320d does sound like a tractor - not helped by the engine being under the dash and the gearbox being between you and the passenger. However, it pulls like a f--king train!! Couldn't believe how quick my Uncles' lovely Imola 2002 example was for a two litre diesel daily driver when I first went in it. Smoking!

Stick with the BMW. Surely paying to change will negate any advantage improved fuel consumption may give.

On the A4 I don't really think there are any serious 'must have's'. Here is a cynic's view, it'll irritate quite a few on here but there's truth in it!:

S-Line - style over substance. Some think you should also be automatically given appointments with your chiropractor on purchase due to the harsh ride quality.

2.0TDi - TOO NOISY. Goes bloody well in its limited rev range, but if this is a class leading diesel (in terms of noise & vibration) then petrol has little to worry about. Also not as economical as you may think. In our experience it does mid 40's under mixed motoring with my wife driving; and she is very restrained!

Options - only buy the ones you want. None of them are going to make much difference come time to sell. You certainly don't have to pay for metallic paint, brill red or black are fine. My wife likes her folding mirrors, so if you park in tightish places they are worth getting.

Finally, if you do go ahead make sure you get a good discount. The B8 will be here soon and I hope that will properly move the game on (B7 didn't - little reason to prefer it over B6)

Of course you do! Well at least you know what you're letting yourself in for.

We bought my wife an A3SB 2.0TDi about a year ago - in a moment of madness. She love's it but whilst I'm still astonished by how hard it pulls, I'm equally astonished by how unrefined it is. The economy is just mildly disappointing.

The strong low rev performance that many love seems to make for rather jerky progress. She made me feel distinctly green in it on Sunday.

Not sure really. Just get the impression that the 2.0TDi may lack some of the economy virtues of the 1.9TDi. Not seen many people boasting about >50mpg out of the 2.0TDi.

For us it's just been midly dissapointing economy wise. I think they may vary, the demo car seemed more economical but we didn't use it for long enough to be sure.

I'm mildly disappointed with the economy from mine, but most of our journeys are short and the engine hardly has a chance to warm up.

However, cruising on the motorway I have had over 60mpg. Which is perfectly respectable.

Plus we've only done 2500 miles, so I'm sure there's better to come...

we all know you pay a premium for the audi badge, the sensible answer is to wait for the Skoda Octavia Vrs diesal. You know it makes sense. Or is that it makes no sense?

Sorry, but it's not just the badge that pushes the prices up. You really can tell the difference and I don't believe anyone when they say otherwise. We have a whole range of cars at work and when you move about from Skoda to VW to Audi, you can appreciate the differences.

As one lad put it "I don't care if my glove box door slams down - I don't need it dampened" - just one example. Yes, both cars do the same, but you get what you pay for. I cannot believe how noisy the 2.0 TDI 140 Diesel Octavia is compared to the Audi and VW versions. I guess it's all the sound proofing missing.

I'm not knocking the Skoda's - they are great cars. Especially the Fabia. The old Octavia vRS was great, but I think the new one has gone more feminine looking.

The other problem is the new-look Octavia. What have they done crazy.gif No one at our place wants to upgrade to it.

Have you tried an E90 320d BMW? In my opinion it knocks the stuffing out of the A4 2.0Tdi. The ride is a bit jiggly on the run flat tyres but the engine shows Audi how a Diesel can be (the Saab 1.9TiD engine is also much better than the Audi). Both these cars are better to drive (IMHO) than the B7 2.0Tdi, So much so that I will not be buying a B7 Audi 2.0Tdi... not enough real changes from my B6, and I would know that the BMW is a better car and therefore be majorly pissed off with myself about it! The Saab is a nice car - but not of the Audi/BMW quality!

Looks like I will be sticking with my B6 1.9Tdi until I try something I really like (B8 or... the 320d is nice, but not nice enough, and the 330d is too expensive for me at the moment)!

Damian - I ordered a 2.0TDI S-line albeit an Avant a week ago. You may want to consider mutlitronic if you haven't already as many who have experienced this say is really works well with this engine. This link may help you decide.

Regaring the 18" 5 arm alloys these are now a standard part of the s-line pack. The sline pack + sales literature + webiste configurator are a mess!!! Suggest you get the saleman to confirm what you do/don't get as there is a lot of out-of-date info. being published by Audi.

The other piece of advice I would pass on is to get print outs from some of on-line brokers (if they charge a fee for providing a quote just 'print screen' or similar to get a hardcopy of the info.). These generally give a litle more discount (10% ish) and should help you to negotiate the price down ( link). I ended tyring two dealerships with one managing a 10% discount whilst the other couldn't do better than 8%.

In terms of options I would list leather, bose, multitronic, rear parking sensors & pearlescent paint as 'must haves'
