My front tyres were getting pretty low on tread, 3mm as opposed to 6mm on the front (All four are pilot sports, but the front has a different tread pattern to the rear). So anyway I swapped the front for the rear so I could wear the rears down and get a set of four when I change. The trouble is after the swap I got a whining noise from the rear end when I lift off the throttle. This happened even in neutral and seemed worse after the car warmed up, and then louder still after “givin it some”. The noise disappeared as soon as I touched the throttle, even when cruising without accelerating. I’ve now swapped them back and the noise has gone. 1. What is happening to cause this noise. 2. Could it damage anything if I swapped them back (I’m not going to). 3. If I replace the just the front tyres will the noise come back? [/ QUOTE ] I have been told not to swap the wheels from front to back and vice versa as the car gets used and settles in, in a certain way. Rachel Posted February 25, 2006 Report Share Posted February 25, 2006 Tyres are your most probable culprit. I did a flip on rim, then front -> back and the noise was amazing. It was the treads blocks "walking" when the car was under way - giving a "thrum thrum thrum" sort of sound when at constant speed. calumcousins Posted February 25, 2006 Report Share Posted February 25, 2006 i remember reading a while ago either on here or vortex about diff wind-up which i think is what happens if you have different diameter wheels front to rear. Tho i am sure this shouldn't have any adverse effect, the difference in diameter of the front and rear wheels due to either pair being more worn than the others would mean that the smaller set would have to rotate more times than the larger set to keep up with them. This difference would then have to be acommodated by the centre diff. Like i say though, im not sure this would cause any noises as such. I had this problem, it took them weeks to figure out what it was, then when they opened up the rear diff they found metal filings coming out with the oil. Turned out i needed a new one, of course my warrantee ran out 2 weeks before so I had to pay £3500 for a new rear diff to my disgust!! Rocket_Man Posted March 3, 2006 Author Report Share Posted March 3, 2006 So I’m on the way home tonight on the motorway and the dreaded noise starts up again. At first quiet, like last week but then getting louder. At this point I’m thinking the worst, the rear axel is well fecked. So I pull over at the next garage to see if something is wrong with my tyres. Yup, rear right is going flat. Upon closer inspection I find a nail sticking out. At this point I thank the tyre fairy, as I have a set of four F1's waiting to be fitted tomorrow! But anyway, I pump the tyre up and driver home (with no more noise). I know my pressures were good last week because I adjusted them after the swap, but it looks like my initial problem was caused by a slight difference in the tyres which were “well bedded in” and slightly bald on the inside edge Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
