Simonl
[ QUOTE ] ....I think it refers to 'injection' too. But I can't see how any Golf can be viewed as a 'Gran Turismo' car. GT cars are the type that race at Le Mans. [/ QUOTE ] I thought someones GTI won LeMans once

stevie_d
Copied from The Times "What does GTI mean? Nobody knows for sure how a car that was devised by a group of Volkswagen engineers in their spare time and known as the “Sport Golf” got the name GTI. The suffix GT was already commonplace in 1975 but the “I”? Injection? The fastest version of the then new Golf hatchback was the first Volkswagen with fuel injection but the German for injection is einspritzung. So that’s not it. Perhaps it just sounded right." CMC950
Hey Paddy Driver, You claim 'Not wanting to rub any of the lads up the wrong way - but those that say 17" are better ride and cheaper to repair obviously have 17" and wish now they had ordered 18" Sorry to burst your bubble pal, but I can afford either, no problem. Currently the car is on order with 18's but I'm thinking of amending that to the 17's because I'm starting to think that the 18's look to Shiny and Chav and the 17's are more subtle, in keeping with the class of the car. Perhaps your trying to justify spending £400 on wheels that are virtually identical from 10 feet away.

Snoopy
[ QUOTE ] Surely a GTI with only 17" wheels will be "one to avoid" come resale! [/ QUOTE ] Not if the 18s style of wheel corrodes like every other make of that type of finish.
