jem2768 Posted July 15, 2003 Report Share Posted July 15, 2003 Grrrrrr..... Was on hols last week drivin' round doin' the family thang. Went to this country park that has really high ramps on the way out, and those metal, one-way ramps with the folding teeth. Everything was fine, crawled over them, no probs, drove home, went back out to the car to do a message and noticed a mark on my front tyre. I had a closer look and it would appear that the "rim protector" bit of the sidewall at one point has been roughly hacked off - not deep, just a couple of mm of the top rubber but about 2-3 inches long. The wheel has never so much as seen a kerb, they're 18" with 225/40 tyres, not more than perhaps a couple of thou miles on them. Sooo.... I know your not meant to fix tyres with sidewall damage, but does the rim-protector bit count as sidewall damage? It all looks ok to me, no bulging, just looks like it needs stuck back with some kind of rubber adhesive. It's either that or another hundred quid for new rubber and a nasty letter to our local council to complain about the damn ramps Anyone offer any advice? I have some vinyl trim adhesive or the adhesive from a bike puncture repair kit that may do the job... Problem is for some reason the car has THREE new tyres on it and one old one - 3 Hankook k104's and some Goodyear something or others. I was gonna replace the goodyear when I had a spare few quid lying around as I don't like having 2 different tyres on the front!! But yeah, I totally agree - one oddball tyre is a nuisance, especially when it's on the front. The front end is a bit wandery over rough surfaces and before I start wondering about wear on the bushes & steering (it's only got 45k miles on it) I need to get the tyres the same on all corners.
