stevie_d
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] The leather/leatherette debate is a non issue as all cars with leather interior have some leatherette ( my 8 year old VR6 highline did for example so it's not a cost pinching exercise. [/ QUOTE ] How is it not a cost pinching exercise. The ONLY reason a manufacturer would opt for leatherette is cost, it's hardly going to be lack of cows. [/ QUOTE ] 99% of cars sold with leather seats contain leathertette in a lot of places! I burst some lads bubble at school, his dad bought him a 3 series (I know ) and he was bragging about how all of his interior was leather...when I got him to read the brochure back, the "some parts maybe leatherette" When my dad bought his Daimler he was told by the dealer that everything was leather, this is very rare as standard Jags/Mercs/BMW's don't have it. So I don't think we're being conned/outdone/tricked by VW I can't comment on the 1yr old GTI, as mine is currently minus a week old However, my MKIV leather isn't great tbh, but I still think it's worth it. You will need to feed and clean it regularly, but if you do this then you'll have no problems. As for resale, well I'm no expert, but I expect leather/interlago to be very similar in both terms of price and desirability. The leather seats look good and make the interior a bit more exec, however it's a Golf GTI not a Passat so the interlagos cloth looks at home and is very sporty/old skool
Chav
[ QUOTE ] Chav, we shouldn't have to keep justifying ourselves in response to such comments. If the topic is of no interest to you, that's fair enough, and you can easily check out and contribute to any of the other zillions of topics which make up TSN. Cheers [/ QUOTE ] I'll post where I want thanks. If you don't like what I have to say, feel free to ignore me!
Chav
In fact Robin, I'll repeat a statement I made in a previous thread in the GTI forum - don't take things too seriously! Cheers
RedRobin
Hey! Chav! I wasn't suggesting you don't post here but just responding to the nature of your last post above. I'm not inclined to ignore anyone....Even the biggest idiots or arseholes can have something either useful or amusing to say on occasions. I'm not one to hold grudges but I'll always respond honestly whoever you are. Cheers

fjfr
I love the silver leather in my S3. Makes the interior look wow, which I don't think cloth can ever do. But if the option is £1700, then maybe that'd be better spent on a remap/suspension mods if you're gonna keep the car for a while..
RedRobin
John_Carter has silver leather in his S4 and everyone raves about it. But that car with its V8 and Millteks has plenty to rave about! I didn't realise the leather option was as much as 1,700 squid!! I'm glad I did the suspension mod - Much too easily overlooked.
billy2shots
i have had my leather clad gti for over a year and so far so good. A few magazines have stated the cloth seats havent worn that well. I think the owners on here may tell you otherwise. I have said it before and this is only my opinion (dont shout at me cloth owners) but do you really want cloth in a +£20,000 car? I am 23 so the nostalgic arguement is lost on me. mainy
Forgot to mention in my earlier post that I had leather in my old TT which was absoloutely perfect after 4 years and 37k miles. Before I bought the GTI I looked at a few MK4 R32s and in every example between 1-2 years old and less than 20k miles the leather was as saggy as Bagpuss As I bought my GTI second hand I didn't have the luxury of ticking the box in the first place BUT I seriously doubt if I would have as I love the old school look of the Interlagos cloth which works well for me as I dont tend to f@rt in the car that much
Muppetboy
Always say the same... Leather too hot and stick in the summer and too feckin cold in the winter. Plus the cloth is to die for daaaaaawling!
mikemod
I would have chosen the leather if it had been more like £700 but then as others have said it is only part leather and the other part vinyl. I remember the old vinyl seats used to burn your legs in the summer when you were wearing shorts. It seems so overpriced when you consider the DSG option is £300 less. I had cloth seats in my last MKIV GTI and after 5 years they still looked good as new and smelt fine, what are you guys doing in the car I see no reason why the cloth seats in the MKV wont last as long. Although Leather is nice when you open the door in the morning . I suppose I could just leave a chamois in the back seat
Markallain
From my own experience I regretted not speccing a number of options on the first R32 I bought. But at the time I did not have the spare cash. The R32 I have now is fully loaded. All I'd say is if you are in any doubt try not to leave anything out that you want if you can afford to. Personally I'd always go for leather and I think when it comes to the second hand market a leather specced car is more likely to be that bit more desirable to most. It's a very personal thing but for me leather always makes the interior feel that bit more "special".
SMB
A few copmments worth adding, leather includes electric lumbar and heated seats in the £1665 price, so it not just the leather at £1700. in summer they can be hot if left in the sun, but in winter the heated seats are excellent, and very quick to warm. So they are not cold. The Mk4 R32 had a bad seat base design for the UK market, this was fixed for the USA market and they do not sag. THe GTI seats don't have the same problem. Cleybrooke
At the risk of offending anyone in their choice (far be it for me to add such a crass or egregious post) but the key issue is that VW only offer Elephant Grey (In that special grey that was popular on cheap shoes and leather blouson jackets circa 1982) or Diarrhoea Beige. Neither of which do anything (in my most humblest of humble of opinions) to lift the ambiance of the interior. Quality of the cloth well tested with two kids grinding in general detritus and so far been impressed with how easy they have been to clean up. Some cars need leather as standard otherwise the spec is wrong and it will hit the resale. On a GTi it matters not a jot.

[/ QUOTE ] I agree mate, I went for the leather for my benefit, but at resale it won't matter as the GTI is a "sports" car and leather isn't a must, plus the cloth is great as standard!
