mulkbear
Well i am thinking of getting a second job as i want to fund a new car (GTI/R32/Focus RS), so i am thinking of becoming a doorman because i am 6',4" around 20 stone and can look mean (but am a girly pants really) but i don't know the what why and when of how to become a doorman. So:- How do you get a Doorman's permit ? Are Doormen hired though a agency or by the pubs/clubs ? Is anyone on TSN a Doorman or has been a doorman ? If you have a police record can you still be a doorman ?

Pincher
I *think* having a criminal record excludes you from qualifying for a permit to become a doorman.

Botang
You need to speak to the Licencing Department at your local council they will have all the relevant knowledge and paperwork to get you sorted, if you have a criminal record ask them, it generally depends on the crime and how long ago it was, I would think as long as it wasnt something that nded with a custodial sentance they will give you a permit. They will also know the contact details of any companies that supply doormen
ian_m
As Botang says, speak to your local licensing department, In my area there is a scheme called Door Safe which is ran by the council and is a permit for door staff. Not sure about the criminal record side of things, most of the bouncers around here get nicked on a regular basis anyway There are security companies that hold contracts etc for events and clubs, in the SW there is a company called "stewart Security" they do events like Glastonbury Festival etc, its much more worthwhile to become involved with firms like this as you can get more work

I spent a year working for a major security concern up here - and the work ranged from being a doorman, stewarding at football, rugby and concerts, to things like T in the park. The money wasn't great, but the nature of the work meant I could fit it around Uni (so you could fit it around your work) and there was enough people on the books to let you pick and choose when to work. I had some fairly hairy moments though
Tomk
mate of mine used to do it but once when checking a guys coat his hands were cut to bits as the c*nt has put razor blades in his hood !
Insurance Jon
used to do it but it's not worth it for the money, on the upside you get paid for going out. In our area a criminal record prevents you from having a licence, but the rehabilitation of offenders act means they have to ignore convictions over a certain age. mulkbear
I have been in touch with local council, and i will have to wait 6 month (and then they will ignore my past) and then i can apply for a licence plus a 4 day course. thank for the help
drpellypo
I've done the course, and have done some work at Newcastle Arena (although less doorman - more (undercover?) security.) Basically get to wonder round the Arena in normal clothes with an earpiece in and look out for/sort any problems with purse snatchers etc. Course is easy by the way. Soapsuds
i think they concentrate on skills to split up fights etc. now, rather than actually jumping in, so if you are a bit of a girl and dont want to break a nail, you should be ok! My dad was a bouncer when he came back from the Korean war. Bloody nutter. Was in the Quality St. Gang from Manchester, the lot that booted the Krays out of our fine city Times have changed and his old mates who used to own some big clubs around here have now retired becuase they kept getting into trouble, or have died! Still a bit of a risky game though.... you never really know what people might be carrying. Wire brushes are the one to avoid! Make sure you really want to do it Have you tried envelope stuffing of an evening......
alexc
It's not for everyone, the way you have to look at it is if you're in a situation where it's kicking off and you have no backup, would you or could you do what it takes to get the job done. A friend of mine runs a security firm and the amount of guys who have bottled out within the first couple of hours on their first night is hard to believe. Also, the criminal record thing depends on whether your offences have been public order prosecutions, ie ABH, GBH.

The BBC still use the quality st for their location security in manchester, probably the best security you can get.

shao_khan
I did a spell many years ago at a club in Newcastle near the NCP behind the cinema complex (cant for the life of me remember the club name - but its sister club to the boat). Getting the job was easy, I was 6'2" and only 12stone, basically had to prove to head door man I could handle myself outside the back of the club - so nothing too difficult as he was overweight, slow and untrained I presume these days there are more legit ways to get in!
