Hi guys, my first post on here but been viewing for a while, all good stuff!!

Just wandering how often other S3 owners have to top up their oil?? Low oil light seems to come on on mine every 2-3k or so, is this normal.

Its a 51 plate, 54k miles and it's on the variable servicing by the way.

Cheers, Si

Welcome to TSN

I wouldn't say that was normal at all. My S3 never needed topping up between services. Mine was on 10k oil changes though. Still sounds excessive. What sort of driving do you do? short commute or motorway blasts? or combination?

Can you see any oil drips on the road where you park?

Do a mix of motorway and town driving, bout 20 miles each way to / from work. No signs of any leaks.

Got the car about 2 months ago and soon after the warning on the computer came on so I put a litre of oil in, then yesterday (about 2-3k later) warning came on again.

Just had a thought that the litre I put in may not have filled it right up - should have checked I guess! smashfreakB.gif

1 liter every 3k isn't too bad i guess. I doubt that 1 liter would have topped it up much above the minimum line so it may not be that bad. Turbo's are supposed to drink more oil after all. I did find it strange that my S3 never needed top-ups but every car is different when it comes to things like that. Just check the underside of yer car when you get a chance. if there's a leak, you'll see oil on the underside.

I've got to say I'd be very worried about that level of oil consumption if it was my car.

Like Paul, all 3 S3's I've owned have not used much oil. Whilst I check mine every fortnight, its only really every 5k miles I need to top it up.

a lot depends on how you drive. Admittedly, i drove like miss daisy most of the time so i never went through any oil really. But i guess if you were to boot it about a lot, or do lots of foot-downs on the motorway, then i'd expect you to go through some oil as the turbo gets seriously hot and burns some of the oil up.

Hmmm, got me worried now!!

Like I say there doesn't seem to be a leak and cant see any smoke but it must be going somewhere!

Will top it right up tonight and see how long it lasts.

By the way what oil should I be using - the stuff i got came from Audi and it's the Shell Helix I think (not sure what weight) - I just assumed that they would give me the right stuff.

Also does anyone know of a good Audi specialist in Gtr Manchester, not sure I trust the main stealers after some comments I have read!!

Cheers Guys.

Mine barely uses a 500ml every 12-15k miles. Ive heard that the S3 engines vary a lot when it comes to oil consumption. Audi are aware of it and will only look into any work if it uses more than 1L per 1k miles.

I think its just something your going to have to keep an eye on.

When was it last serviced? Make sure you use a quality oil as inferior oils do more harm than good.

I use nothing but Castrol. (As supplied at factory with) and by me for my services.

I keep it topped up right to the upper edge of the cross hatching on the dipstick, and it takes next to nothing to keep it there.

I check it regularly, as the S3 oil level warning is notoriously late in its operation.

I've never checked my oil once in my current S3, or my old one. Never has the oil light ever came on.

What if you're unlucky, your sensor is faulty and your engine is as dry as a witch's tit?

You know how great Audi electronics are.... grin.gif
