chipandpin
I was told by Adrian Flux that as yet the MKV R32 alarm or immobiliser are NOT Thatcham approved, but that this was not to say it isnt up to Thatchams standards - it just hasnt yet been tested and approved (yet). This was back in Feb so things may have changed
Mook
Sorry Vindaloo, I don't know, but any insurer worth it's salt should know whether the standard alarm is Thatcham approved.

UKLooney
Was arranging insurance today prior to collection tomorrow I was told that the car had a Thatcham Cat 1 Approved Security system. Insurance group 18E. 'E' being the significant bit (MkV I assume?)

Calm Chris
When I got my Mk1V R32 it was so new that Thatcham hadn't done the assessment for either the insurance group rating or the alarm system rating (they do both services for the UK ins industry) I spoke to Thatcham's operations director about this due to my insurer refusing to offer a policy on a car without both ratings. Thatcham were top class. They spoke to Elephant and Elephants pit underwriter at Lloyds and the 1st year ins cost was £530 (result). Ask VW UK to confirm the alarm standard for the MK V and then feed this detail to your insurers. Alternatively speak to Thatcham, asking for the schedule time for the alarm test on the Mk V and go from there.
GTI_Boi
If its 18E insurance group and Cat1 then it will be Thatcham approved. Basically, the better the security of the alarm the better the suffix (it goes D, A, E). The better the security, the more the rating group decreases. So an 18E is basically a Group 20 rating but the security is so good that the ABI drops the rating by two groups - the key point being that they do this on the advice of Thatcham. vindaloo
I sent an e-mail to Thatcham & in their reply they confirmed that all alarm/immobilsers fitted to the Golf MkV are Thatcham Cat1 approved.
paulhaines
Vindaloo... I had this problem with my Mk IV R - I have a detailed list of all approved thatcham alarms / imobilisers and the IVR is on there. If you go to the thatcham site you can find and download the list it is (or was) a little difficult to find). if not pm me and I will send you the one I have. Timski
According to the ABI website, the MKV R32 is listed as a group 18E with a security code T1. The MKIV R32 is listed as a group 18A with a security code T1. The letter 'A' means that the vehicle's standard security system MEETS the requirement for this group. The letter 'E' means that the vehicles's standard security system EXCEEDS requirements and the group rating has therefore been reduced. (e.g. A group 9 car where the security requirement exceeds Thatcham’s minimum standard for that group will be listed as an 8E.) The security code 'T1' means that the security system HAS been tested by Thatcham and has been deemed to comply with their criteria. In answer to the question, both MKIV and MKV R32s definitely have Thatcham approved security systems, although the MKV's system must be slighty better since it EXCEEDS rather than MEETS Thatcham's security requirements. If only thieving scumbags would keep their filthy paws of our beloved motors everything would be so much simpler.
