would rear pads wearing out and very worn disks put these warning lights on.

I know they are quite worn recently changed the fronts and saw the rears where wearing thin, so will be changing them anyway.

hope the lights go out, if not where else to look.

Hey.

I have this problem on a 98/S Passat I have.

It is most likely the Bosche 5.3 ABS unit playing up, you need to send it off to be refurbed. Will cost you a few hundred but will make your car roadworthy though. However be careful who you choose to fix your car.

I used one company and on my 6th "refurbed" ABS unit from them I gave up and have got one going to a better company next week.

It also could be worth checking the speed sensors for broken wires. As the fronts can get chewed if you opted for the 16" wheel option on the Sport model.
