In bright sunlight, you cannot see any of the back lights, at all. Only just if you look very very carefully, but the silver surrounds reflect sunlight like nothing else. I followed my son in his courtesy car and wasn't aware that he was indicating left until I was parked behind him! Again as you say the sun was causing the problem.
