This problem happens a lot on the Mk5s due to the curvature, and warm weather encourages the peel-off. Best solution is to screw fix with standard number plate plastic screws - Black or white according to where you fix them.

I peeled off the dealer plate to put on my own, left a residue of the old pads, dealer gave me some others. It's just starting to peel away at the edges, and I haven't a clue how to get the old pads off completely. I like the sound of the no nails, I have a nice new tube left over from bedroom refurbishment.

Any ideas for the best way to stick it back?

You can buy packs of number plate sticky pads from your local motor factors - if they don't have any, ask your VW dealer to give you some tape for free (hopefully!)

White spirit (keep away from paint), or better still surgical spirit (which seems to not affect the paint) is great for removing sticky glue residue from almost anything.

I used to buy old telephone systems from liquidators, phones that had been trashed with stickers would look new withing minutes of getting out the surgical spirit.

It does stink, so garage or outside only unless you want the Mrs moaning about the smell.

I took mine off and held it in a curve, slightly more than the line of the car, and then heated it with a hair dryer.

Then left it overnight held in the curve shape.

The next morning I just used the double sided sticky pads to attach it

As it was the same shape as the car there was no stress at the ends and it has given no problems since, 12 months on. smile.gif
