Soapsuds
I know you can book an MOT and legally drive a motor TO and FROM the place of inspection, BUT can you actually drive it legally to a garage to have pre-MOT work done - NOT the garage that will be doing the MOT though (i.e. where they dont undertake MOT's)??? Need to take the Scumball motor in for an MOT in the next 2 weeks. Although most repairs can (and are as we speak!) be done in the garage at home, we need to pop it up on a ramp and sort out some other issues such as fuel tank, some hoses under there and chassis inspection etc. A mate has kindly said we can use his garage (business) for this, but he doesnt do MOT's you see...... shark_90
As far as I know, it's only if the car has a booked MOT and only for that journey. If you can get hold of a set of trade plates though, you can drive it without an MOT.

Mook
You can only drive a car to an MoT test if it's been booked in. If it fails, you can't drive it back (unless you've got some dodgy trade plates of course...)
shark_90
Yeah I should have made myself clearer - it's only to the test centre that you're covered, not back again if it fails. You need to be insured as normal, too. Unless, of course, you do have some trade plates from a "mate"
Soapsuds
yea, just found a webiste that outlines this..... you are ok to drive it DIRECT to a place that will do the repairs after you get a fail certificate. This will work out ok for us, but will most probably mean another MOT fee..... Unless i can get hold of those plates...... they ARE legit!
ChadW
Doh! Looks like I have to book an MOT on the day I pick my car up from the body shop then as my MOT runs out next Monday and bet they do not finish the work by then!
