Problem_Child
I have to agree with the original point, although hot hatches are still cheaper than they were five years ago they're not as cheap as they were even a couple of years ago. Personally I'd live without all the toys (except perhaps ABS) if it meant the car was a couple of grand cheaper. I think I'll wait for the 197 Cup! Remember the stir caused by the announcement of the CTR price in '01? That doesn't seem to happen any more.
sayerbloke
[ QUOTE ] And Yet in the USA the new Golf GTI 2.0T is £12,500 including all taxes etc...... [/ QUOTE ] *sigh* Say, you're in a good position to answer this; I've noticed second hand cars seem to hold their money quite a bit better over there. Obviously good when selling but bad when buying... Fair comment?
DanG
Yep, that seems to be true.... Due to the HUGE amount of leasing that goes on over here (UK = PCP) where the manufacturer sets the residual, used car values are therefore held 'higher' to reduce the monthly payments. In reality, if you bought a car, keep it for a couple of years and then traded it in, you are going to get feck all for it.... (My Audi and Touareg!) Leasing seems to be a far better way of doing things over here and works out far cheaper than eating the cost of depreciation yourself... Its definately what I will do next. e.g. Touareg has depreciated by 45% in two years, but if I had leased it would have only gone down by 28%....... but I know the stealer will have mine back on the forecourt for 28% lower than purchase price....... winrya
I suppose the thing is that VW sell the GTI for £20k because people buy them. There are long waiting lists pretty much everywhere it is on sale. Seconds hand models go for similar money to new. So yes the next generation hot hatches are expensive, but we keep buying them. Honda have to respond to the golf with a well kitted out car because the market has changed since the type r came out. People now want performance and toys. I played with both cars before i went for the GTI but the type r was too harsh/noisy with no toys and limited performance in day to day driving, if the next one offers more then i may be more tempted. RedRobin
[ QUOTE ] The other issue is that what was a hot hatch is now really a Hot Family size medium sector Hatch (IMO), the GOlf, Astra, Focus are all bigger - is what we need is more stuff atthe Polo / Fox size levels. [/ QUOTE ] ....I very much agree. This is a nice little hot hatch IMO:
